You dont think any of them honestly thought Trump was a Russian agent do you? They wanted an excuse to spy on him.
They didn't believe he was Putin's puppet but they did believe he was a corrupt businessman. If they couldn't find anything that was illegal and actionable then they would leak anything else that would embarrass or damage him.
Trumps taxes are just the beginning and another avenue to widen the investigation. Its the same playbook just a different method of doing it.

They want to say that he's not worth what he says he's worth. It's a simple gotcha attempt that has zero teeth

possible tax fraud.
IF ONLY we had a Federal organization tasked to find that very kind of stuff.
It is SO SAD that we have to rely on a a fat a-hole in the House to figure all this stuff out.
IF ON:LY IF ONLY IF ONLY - hell we might even have to rely on MAXINE WATERs to root out this stuff.
They should sue the government for abuse - making them do so much unexpected work

Seems like IRS audit would catch that, now I can see Dims taking a perfectly legal tax position and twisting/spinning it into a crime, as a smear campaign if nothing else.

Shady business deals or paying an unusually lower tax rate than most Americans. His base won't care either way.
They are hoping to get the moderate vote by showing him in a bad light.

Where in the return is this listed?

So is being rich good or bad?

Deals with foreign entities that are an extreme conflict of interest. You're welcome.

1040-EZ, stupid.
I kid.

So you are talking about returns for 2017 and later?

They just want to say that he's a $900 millionaire, not a billionaire like he says. That or they want to scrutinize something in his returns that's perfectly legal

How does one ascertain a net worth from tax returns?

Your response didn't address this. Try again.

Seriously, I’ve been trying to avoid politics for a while and I don’t understand what they are after. A nugget of a deal with him and a Russian company? Prove he’s not as rich as he says he is? Show that a rich man didn’t pay a lot in taxes?
1. Some think it will reveal something illegal.
I don't buy this because even if there was something illegal, and there is no evidence to support this, I doubt tax returns are going to be where one can find it.
2. Some think it will show that he paid little in taxes.
This is probably true, but we already know that he had a nearly $1 billion deduction from the mid-90's he could claim for the next 2 decades. And unless it shows he didn't pay much because he didn't make much, then I don't think it's going to really matter since everyone tries to reduce their tax liability and only those who already lack the self-awareness to realize they do the same, will really care.
3. Some think it will show that he didn't make as much as someone with his self-reported wealth and business success would be expected to make.
I think this is probably true, but it still won't make a difference since people have already established their beliefs about him and his business acumen.
Personally, while I've made it clear I don't think he's near as successful or wealthy as he reports, I would just like to get more information to determine that either way. But I guess that would depend on getting the details of his returns, not just what is reported on the 1040.
At the same time, even though I want to see them, I know that I don't actually have a valid claim to see them.

Throw the Biden Bunch in there too!
