Can someone explain how Obama can decide on his own to ban US ivory sales?

I'm not really looking to bash the man, just want to understand how he can legally do this.

My understanding is that if you own any ivory the burden of proof will be on YOU as an individual to prove that it somehow complies with Obama's new decree.

New York, and the country as a whole, has an illegal ivory problem, one that President Obama wants to end with a complete ban on the commercial sale of ivory. The ban is part of an executive order against the illegal wildlife trade that the White House announced Tuesday. Owning ivory will still be OK—assuming it was purchased legally in the first place—but selling the white stuff will be a big no-no, unless it’s a “bona fide antique” of over 100 years old (a fact sellers will have to prove).

Its the same reason he can change laws on his own, because no one will challenge him on it.

I think Kings get to make the rules. Queens too.

He did the same thing with flavored cigarettes... I'd love to see a constitutional lawyer argue that one

See Obama hasn't met his quota of EO and has to continue until he signs as many as Bush. According to some on this board all EO are equall whether it is making a flag half mast or anything else. Oh and Fox News has you brained washed.

This is one of the least egregious things he has done IMO.

That will teach him not to mess with you.

This isn't the only issue Obama has with Ivory.

Not ivory, it is actually hair in the horn of one.

Why would he ban Ivory? I quit using it a long time ago. I prefer Irish Spring or Axe.

Will I now have to register my ivory dominoes? Will background checks for dominoes be a thing of the future?
I don't want to go to jail.
Maybe I'll just get droned and be put out of my misery.

One of the things I received after my grandmothers passing was a line of elephants carved out of ivory, that I used to play with as a child.
So am I to understand that heirloom could be illegal to own if it is less than 100 years old?

My understanding is that it will be illegal for you to sell or give to anyone else.

1) the name
2) it floats in water

Well, guess I'd better be consistent.
The African Elephant Conservation Act of 1989, along with earlier Endangered Species acts, gives the executive branch, led by the President, power to regulate the ivory trade, up to an including an all-out ban.
