No... I know animals are killed for me to eat. But I'm not really an "animal lover".

I'm just trying to understand how a person can love animals and kill those animals.

Its obvious that you weren't reared around farmers. Farmers like/love their animals. They know that most will be slaughtered but they still have a love for them. One of the most difficult decisions my Father-in-law had to make after heart valve replacement at eighty years of age. He had to sell his livestock.

Here is another example of an organization that is full of members that love fish but also love to fish and eat fish. Thus they promote the conservation of fish and their habitat.

Hunters pay billions of dollars a year in fees to lease land. This leased land keeps the habitat in a state that allows animals to live. Without this the land would be used for other uses, homes, farms, malls, etc and then there would be no places for the animals to live...

Hunters take a small amount of the animals a year, if they take too much it depletes future stocks. It is bad long term management...

Okay, that makes sense on a macro level.

But what about the individual level?

I'm trying to understand the mentality of a hunter. A hunter loves ducks. Is interested in ducks. Thinks ducks are beautiful creatures. And then kills them.

I'm trying to understand how somebody who loves the creatures can bring themselves to kill the creature.

It's more akin to respect of, interest and/or seeing a kindred spirit in the animal(s) than "love" like you are thinking of. As an example, some Indian tribes would thank the spirits of the animals they killed, even if they had killed many more than what they needed for survival.
Interesting.

Without the ducks/deer there would be no hunting which we love to do so inturn we love them for they give us the opportunity. There is a tion of reasons why I love hunting. Being in nature, the commandery as well as the quiet peace when hunting alone. The list goes on.

This to.

You are delving into the psychology of hunting now. It's probably different for each hunter but for me I've always lived by the rule, if you kill it you eat it. (Unless it's a dois gris ).

Either you are at this point trolling like an SOB, or you are displaying how obtuse you are to the board.

It is something that can not be explained but needs to be experienced... Many people that have never hunted fall in love with it after the first time. Hard wired into most humans, especially males...

Well not the quail, but that is out of the hunter's hands. Habitat changes have all but doomed the quail...

It will never get back to where it was when I was growing up (we would quail hunt most afternoons after school) but they are trying. I grew up in the day, though, where you just walked through your neighbors' property and they didn't mind. Now, you would get a trespassing ticket.

What wick said, there is something about a group of ducks cupping into the decoys just right or a huge group of geese tornadoing down on you that just cant be explained with words. The hair on my neck stands up and everyone is quiet, all you do is listen and watch in awe. Those are really special days.

I'm not trolling. I guess I just don't "get it", since I've never been hunting.

I could understand if people needed to hunt for survival. I can understand hunting to keep animal populations in check.

But those things seem more like necessities rather than pleasure.

I can even understand enjoying hunting. I'm sure it's fun.

But what I am having trouble grasping is enjoying hunting while also loving those animals. That's the part I'm having trouble understanding. The hunt seems fun, but actually killing an animal you are fond of seems not as fun.

Were it not for hunters working through their state wildlife agencies and such, encouraging responsible hunting regulations, contributing to improved habitat, food sources and such, we would not have the deer population that we have, the wild turkey probably would be almost absent without the work for many years of the National Wild Turkey Federation and no one can possibly calculate the good the Ducks Unlimited has done for so many years.

Deer and turkey were almost eradicated in North Alabama in the 40s/50s. Hunter groups brought in deer from up around Michigan. If you didn't have wildlife management funded through hunting licenses, there wouldn't be any deer, turkey, or quail around here today.

Personally, I'd be happy to have the deer population exterminated. They're nothing but 100+ lb forest rats that can eat $100 worth of your corn per night and ram into your car that's sitting still. They keep autobody shops around here in business.
