California high school history teacher Julianne Benzel was put on paid leave after questioning in front of her students whether school administrations would let a group of students protesting abortion walk out of class in the middle of the school day like they did with students who did so on Wednesday in protests over school shootings.

“I opened up the discussion for if schools … are going to allow one group of students to get up during class and walk out to protest on one issue, would they still give the same courtesy to another group of students who wanted to get up and walk out in protest. And I used the example of abortion,” Rocklin High School teacher Benzel said on Fox News Friday morning.

I won't be the one to start the revolution, but I am in if one of you do.

I don’t agree with the protests, I’m pro life, but asking such a question in front of students is not appropriate. If she truly wanted an answer then set down with those who make such decisions and ask. Jmho.

There has to be more to it than opening up a line of discussion. A teacher isn't going to reprimanded for leading a discussion in comparison to of age children.

They shouldn’t have done that but she also should have taken a different tactic.

I’d have started off with “Who approved of a walkout for gun control?” and then kept changing the topic to stuff like Dreamers / immigration, sexual harassment, etc, and ending with abortion.

The idea would be to show the hypocracy of “free speech” only being allowed if it were considered palatable to the powers that be.

The question was not only appropriate, but should have been asked. We are going to have to confront these people, the time is here. We cannot allow them to censor other viewpoints any more without challenge.

I'm fairly certain this is the part where we start plotting in bars, dress up as Injuns, and make some Tea in the nearest body of water.

Yeah I've got some free time.

This isn’t complicated. Teachers are employees. Employees should not attempt to use customers (in this case students) to express discontent with their employers policies or decisions. Even if the do so by couching with the “just trying to start a conversation” bullshite. Doing so is inappropriate and will result in the same outcome in almost all workplaces. This is true wether the issue is abortion or guns. This teacher learned the same lesson many others have about “free speech” and the workplace. Let the downvotes reign.
