The California Supreme Court on Wednesday blocked a proposal that would split the state into three from the November ballot.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

They still haven't released the opinion. As I understand it, the only opposition filed was from an environmental group who claimed it would just be too damn hard to split up the state.

I am trying to find the briefs now to sort it out.

Hopefully, I can make some sense of this today.

They met the threshold per their constitution to get it on the ballot.

By who? The California Supreme Court just blocked it. There's no real way this case has an avenue to the USSC.

California gonna california.

Here is the brief filed by the environmental group.

Here is the brief filed by the proponent of the initiative (pro se).

Not like it would've ever happened anyway. Even if the citizens of California approved, it would still need congressional approval that is subject to presidential veto.

No way in hell Republicans would let it happen in this form because all 3 would be majority Democrat states.

good all this was about is so they get 4 new senate seats for california and then they can take control of the senate by using the courts instead of the ballot box.

long ago they realized the courts were their way to get and maintain power, thats all this was, a way to add 4 new liberal senate seats for california.

the number of house seats wouldnt change because they are based on population size, but the congressional rules state that each "state" gets 2 senate seats. if california becomes three states then instead of having just 2 senate seats they get 6 senate seats out of this.

Not necessarily.

Plus isnt the electoral college based on overall population to begin with? They would be chopping their electoral votes into a third

They have 55 presently I think. I keep hearing about northern Cal being republican laden. Would be achievable to pick up that "state".

About 6.5 million people live in the Central Valley today, and it is the fastest growing region in California.

Bay Area has 7 million.

So it's not like that red region is so outdistanced apart from L.A.

It's the combination of L.A. and S.F. and make the State overwhelmingly Blue.

You split up S.F. and L.A. and it's a not a landslide in all elections.

Most folks felt it would create two deep blue states and one swing.

Good. There a better chance than we want admit that 3 Californias would put more Dems in Congress and the senate.

That's better than one big deep blue with no swing. I'd take it.

It would do exactly that but they stopped it. You can't make this shite up. The Dems never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

It's really remarkable when you think about it.
