Both times I went to the Sugar Bowl when LSU won national titles in 2004 and 2008, Poydras was turned - before and after the game - into basically a pedestrian boulevard.

I was there as well. No unauthorized vehicle was getting near there at those times. There was an army of police and horses on the sidewalks.

People expected Bourbon to be closed off. You know you are at your own risk in the rest of the city.

That seems comforting to believe...but unrealistic.

Exactly.

The barriers would not have made a difference because they were designed to block the street only and not the sidewalk. The police car was blocking the same thing those poles would have blocked. The truck went around it.
They need to install extra poles on the sidewalk.

Even if they had been working, they didn’t block the sidewalk.

So working barriers would not have stopped this idiot.

Should they have had barriers on the sidewalk to begin with .. sure. But they didn’t. Guy could have very easily planned with a different scheme had they had barriers on the sidewalk.

I’ll post this again… The bollards in the middle of Bourbon further down would have prevented him from gaining speed. Plus the sidewalks are full of balcony supports and fire hydrants. He would have made it a block at most.

People on Bourbon expected the street to be closed. Anywhere else in the city they would be watching for traffic.

So so senseless and sad. I was on the corner of St. Peter's and Bourbon from 9 til 2am at Pat O's. Didn't realize they had explosives at that intersection. We left around 2am and turned left on Bourbon right through where it all happened about an hour later. I assume the whack job was going to drive to that area and detonate the explosives after plowing over people.
