This is a Brer Rabbit situation
Please oh please don’t let there be litigation regarding press freedoms and the competency of the President and please don’t let it all be under oath

You must be out of your mind. Policy papers awaiting the CiC signature being stolen off the President's desk? This person belongs in prison. They have to give him or her up.
I hate the NYT as much as most people here. This sets a bad precedent. Most here won't admit it because they hate the NYT and support Trump unconditionally.

It's not target someone whose critical of the administration (free speech), its to target someone who confesses to actively undermining the administration from within.
This isn't a free speech issue. Don't conflate the two.
It's a free press issue
The press doesn't have the right to intentionally sabotage the commander in chief, whether he's a big meanie head or not.
This person has admitted to crimes against our president and against the people and has demonstrated a national security risk, the failing NYT should be forced to identify the author.

Serious question, the anon NYT writer has admitted to subverting the president's agenda and to stealing documents off his desk.
Where did the writer state they were stealing docs of the desk?

So you really didn’t want the opinions of lawyers... you really just wanted a soapbox on which to perform your histrionics

They printed a story they thought was important. That's what all press does. I hate the NYT and think they aren't a very credible news source, but the moment you force them to turn over sources at the end of a gun, the free press is over.

If Obama did this, everyone here would be screaming about the rights of the free press. It's not something any administration should be doing no matter what party they're in.
Obama routinely did this...
From the NYT own op ed page:
quote:
Over the past eight years, the administration has prosecuted nine cases involving whistle-blowers and leakers, compared with only three by all previous administrations combined. It has repeatedly used the Espionage Act, a relic of World War I-era red-baiting, not to prosecute spies but to go after government officials who talked to journalists. Under Mr. Obama, the Justice Department and the F.B.I. have spied on reporters by monitoring their phone records, labeled one journalist an unindicted co-conspirator in a criminal case for simply doing reporting and issued subpoenas to other reporters to try to force them to reveal their sources and testify in criminal cases.

Yes, I’m fully confident that AG Sessions is working on it as we speak.....

What I’m saying is this road has already been gone down many times.

Threat-assessments, trade strategy, military re-deployments, POTUS detailed travel schedule and security team assignments, nuclear launch codes, etc.
The point is that if someone has admitted to removing "papers" from the Presidents desk without his direction or knowledge, then nobody knows exactly what information was lost.
Would someone at least quote this from the op-ed? Am I reading a different article than you and more?

tried to compel a news agency to reveal a source?

You're not targeting and prosecuting the press. Your seeking information. You know, like spying on a presidential candidate (without evidence).
Forcing the press to turn over sources at gunpoint because they said someone inside the admin was feeding them info is targeting the press. This is pretty basic stuff.

"Because they said someone inside the admin is feeding them info"
Let me help you out a little,
"because someone inside the administration is actively working against the government to undermine the president".
This has to be investigated by whatever means possible. That's includes forcing the NYT to provide the source.

That someone wrote the piece and admitted to crimes, not the same as deep throat saying follow the money...

Some of you people just can't handle freedom. It's ok, it's not for everyone.
