Tariffs are a pretty complex issue overall and it can't be debated by isolating on singular effects.

Exactly. Much like pretty much everything related to the economy.

My guess is they'll steadily increase the prices over a few years

Sounds like the status quo.

I see this as being a pretty big shock to the system as it will effect every manufacturer since so many parts are made outside the US.

That’s the point isn’t it? To bring those manufacturers back to America. Will it work? Probably not but who knows. It’s not as if letting our “allies” leach off of us for the last 60 years has been great for us long term so why not give it a shot.

Maybe just 8 thumbs….it’s an automatic — a concession for the wife. My favorite was a base, Boston Green 1998 318ti hatch.

That will be my next BMW purchase —- I subscribe to Hemmings just to keep my eye on the market. I loved that car and almost cried when I traded it in.

Want to put a wager on that? BMW's overall margin last year was 7%.

So you think that with BMW eating 21% of the tariffs they are going to take a loss on every single car they sell in the US? That doesn’t even make sense.

They won't eat 21% for long. They may be gambling that this game of chicken will end soon, they may have a plan to make it up through servicing or whatever, but very, very few industries that make a physical product can take a 21% hit indefinitely.

The rest of the car is a maintenance nightmare.

Relatively few cars have problems with the actual engine these days. It's everything it's attached to.

Feel like that's true if you get a Chevy, Honda, or BMW these days...

[old fart rant on]

I like old, period. My work truck is a late model Ford F-150.

Now, it gets better gas mileage and handles better than any truck I ever have driven. Yet I could do without the lane-keeping system, driver monitoring, massive big screen monitor, etc…

I miss my 2005 F-150. It drove like a truck — which was well and fine because I didn’t have to deal with all the other bells & whistles.

But i was told that tariffs are passed along to the consumer??

Then you weren’t paying close attention. Tariffs are typically split three ways with the manufacturer/producer, the importer, and the consumer each bearing some of the cost. The longer tariffs are in place the more the costs will fall on consumers simply because the manufacturer can’t keep selling at no profit for long.

Yes. For now.

*It's every single car they export to the US to be clear.
