I just find it humorous that there are those on this board whot are quick to attack any religious viewpoint....and yet they hold views far more extreme...

..But as an aside, I must say Bob Costas needs some dark shades

1. Each group thinks the other is going to hell.

Now this statement upon its face seems somewhat presumptuous. Is this your empirical observation, based on a limited sample size, I assume, or do you just harbor preconcieved notions for all groups with whom you disagree

It's the official stance of the catholic church you dolt. Directly from the catechism, under "extra Ecclesiam nulla salus":

quote:

Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Catholic Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Catholic Church which men enter through baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it

And I grew up a protestant, and know from experience many protestants and Baptists believe catholics are unsaved.

Dolt is a fine choice, and I may add this to my sig, with your permission, although I prefer some of you other terms of endearment from our previous discussions.....I do not presume to know as many protestents as one with your extensive experiences and years of study, but I know plenty, and not one that believes what you have ascribed to them. I fear maybe your understanding may be somewhat impaired by your aggression

So I provide the exact quotation from the official documented beliefs of the largest religious denomination on earth that directly refutes your point and you...ignore it.

I am not catholic and quite frankly could not care less what they believe but a quick google search said this view was " most misunderstood" and that " Jesus Christ was the only way to Heaven"

Yes, many individual catholics believe that.

The official church dogma was, is and likely always will be (since the church claims it is infallible in teachings of God and morals and cannot change) that outside of invincible ignorance you cannot be saved outside the catholic church.

It's just like how many catholics are ok with contraception and gay marriage even though the church is not.

From the second Vatican council, about non-Catholic Christians:

quote:

Nevertheless, our separated brethren, whether considered as individuals or as communities and Churches, are not blessed with that unity which Jesus Christ wished to bestow on all those to whom He has given new birth into one body, and whom He has quickened to newness of life - that unity which the Holy Scriptures and the ancient Tradition of the Church proclaim. For it is through Christ's Catholic Church alone, which is the universal help towards salvation, that the fullness of the means of salvation can be obtained. It was to the apostolic college alone, of which Peter is the head, that we believe that our Lord entrusted all the blessings of the New Covenant, in order to establish on earth the one body of Christ into which all those must be fully incorporated who belong in any way to the people of God…

Frankly my point was lost on you I suppose, your tendancy to generalize and make broad statements is what I am trying to enlighten you on Now for every website you have linked I expect a three sentence summary within the next 15 minutes.

It isn't misunderstood, it just isn't politically correct and so many people dance around it or ignore it altogether.

Catholics also believe works are required for salvation whereas protestants believe it is by faith alone. The bible, assuming you take it to be truth, clearly says we are not saved by faith alone. The bible sides with catholics here.

Likewise, catholics believe that Mary was a perpetual virgin and protestants do not. The bible is clear that Mary had other children and Jesus had siblings. In this case, the bible sides with protestants.

Like I said, it's all a mixture of interpretation and opinion.

How am I generalizing when all I did was quote the official catholic position?

And everything I linked can be summarized as follows:

"Catholics believe in works based salvation, worship Mary and therefore cannot be saved"

Don't you find it irresponsible to not at least research Catholicism? What if they are right about Christianity and you are wrong? This is a pretty important issue here. They claim that, if they are right, you cannot be saved. Given that you already agree with their premise, that Jesus is the savior, is it not incredibly dangerous to ignore the possibility?

Could it be that you just took someone's word for it long ago and believe what your upbringing and social factors dictated you believe?

Nah

The doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary expresses the Virgin Mary's "real and perpetual virginity even in the act of giving birth to Jesus the Son of God made Man".[2][3] According to the doctrine, Mary was ever-virgin (Greek: ?e?p???e??? aeiparthenos) for the whole of her life, making Jesus her only biological son, whose conception and birth are held to be miraculous.

I would agree that there seems be a big disconnect between what I see a lot of churches doing today and what one reads in the New Testemant. However, I think it is counter productive to address these issues in a militant fashion. What I see in the New Testemant appears to set the bar a bit higher than some Christians are willing to go.
