My parents are espoused liberals, support Obama, hate Trump, but I'll be damned if every single one of their political views is not conservative leaning. Lower taxes, lower regulation, property rights, anti-socialist. I just don't talk about Trump with them, we talk issues and we get along fine. It's freaking bizarre, though.

IMO, depends on the group whether you can or should discuss politics/policies. And if you can, there is a right and a wrong way to do it. Keep it open-ended, don't corner people for a 'win'.
I don't think it should be a universal "don't do it!". Heck, all this talk about how divided we are, how are we supposed to come together if we don't discuss things.
I've been giving rides to an old acquaintance (medical issues, he can't drive to his appointments). So we chat, and he is clearly manipulated by the MSM. But I try not to just say "That's fake news!". I might just say "Yeah, I heard that - and I also heard xyz (the info the MSM left out or twisted), and I looked up the source and that alternate info was true". I think he's starting to get that you can't just accept what the MSM says.
Whittle away at it a little at a time, if you try to swat it out in one fell swoop, they tune out.

My entire family, with the exception of my oldest daughter living in California, are extremely Conservative.
The oldest daughter will not be at the mountain house this weekend where we're headed tomorrow. So there will be a ton of Demwits libtard bashing and plenty of Moochelle dick pics passed around by the adults while we play dominoes and consume copious amounts of really good bourbon.

Maybe tell your wife (it's her sister, right?) that if her sister goes too far, that your wife should intervene with something like "OK, that's enough politics, can we change the subject" - so you aren't the bad guy? Maybe set up a signal if you think your wife won't sense that you are ready to explode (but I think she will!)?
