Will it be like smoking at school, where kids do get away with it, sure. Those are the exceptions though, and the no phone policy is easily enforced. To not enforce it, would require schools to just flat ignore the law, which of course is always a possibility with crappier districts.
Ah, the days of the designated smoking area in high school are long past. Buying a pin joint between classes to cope with no air conditioning in the classroom are over…

Good catch.
That’s a dumb carve out.
Not really.
The carve out is 99% for special ed and kids with disabilities so they can have Ipads or similar devices that have specific apps that have a tailored education plan for that student. They sometimes tie in to an outside therapist to keep track of progress.

My kid's teacher confiscated his phone when he was in orchestra practice last year and promptly lost it. Sued the school in small claims court and got a brand new iPhone 16 for the ordeal. Since then they left him and other kids alone, so they can use them during recess and other free hours.

No, it’s not. This is a cellphone ban. Not a “technology in school” ban. They could easily still have phones banned and allow iPads.
They’re not banning kids from using computers.

You know we have teachers giving up and quitting now because of the excessive technology? They can’t teach?
Posted on 5/15/25 at 2:49 pm to BarberitosDawg
The number one reason teachers can’t teach is that discipline is non-existent.

I can’t disagree with that at all. Getting that hine end busted with a paddle from one of the coaches in the front office kept fear in the student and clowns like I was in-line for sure.

Just telling you what someone from Ochsner Behavioral Health told me when we were talking about our school banning social media and then led to talking about phones . There is just a lot of overlap between phones and ipad functions that makes writing these laws difficult. Maybe Alabama laws have a very specific line between the two.

“Smart phones have beneficial roles when used in proper settings. However, these often-disruptive devices have no place in our classrooms during the school day except for educational purposes or during an emergency,” Ivey said. “The FOCUS Act will enable students to ‘focus’ on learning while in school rather than on their phones.”
But make sure your kids' Chromebook is fully charged. Otherwise, they can't learn.
I mean, I support the bill, but it needs to go further. Get Chromebooks out of the classroom. Bring back textbooks. Make teachers actually have to grade homework. Bring back RED INK.

What are they gonna do if there’s a school shooting?

I’m fine as long as there’s cameras installed. There needs to be some monitoring in the class room.

I would like to see math-099 brought back where (and I was on the quarter system) where you learned math with a pencil and paper through high school algebra.
I cheated the system in high school by taking easy classes and somehow got on the honor role because of my grade average. I never took a high math and when I got in class in the military I couldn’t pass the algebra portion even though I aced every other part of the six week exam. The teacher gave me a break and I was exempted from that portion of the test and given my MOS as he had the discretion as I did what I had to do every where else.
I had to take (then called math-099) and taught by the director of the math department at the university and god what a fun class that was when I learned the formulas and the light bulb went on in my head. You don’t have to understand how the formulas work just how to apply them and proper factoring measures.

Good law
Should be nationwide.

Fact is the schools should be jamming the signals and only school cell phones issued to proper folk could get through.
By God they jam at the prisions now and that’s a little different for sure but it’s an option now and state governments are using it.
