This has been discussed on here several times, way before this corona thing started. It makes sense on so many levels, so naturally there will be a huge push against it

Actually, you might be right. Other than being a little bit further south (but still on this side of the planet), there are a few countries that could easily pull off large scale manufacturing and won't have the cartels to deal with.
Plus, a booming South America might accomplish the goal of deterring illegal immigration even more than a thriving Mexico because instead of heading north towards Mexico/U.S. it will draw the Central Americans south.

Shipping a container from Mexico to New York takes five days. It takes 40 days from Shanghai.
This is a big deal as you have capital tied up for a month and half with no product to move.

If you have to have a capable logistics and engineering infrastructure.Mexico doesn't have that plus curroption is endemic in it's society.
Mexico is pretty good at assembling manufactured parts but not so much at manufacturing other than textiles.
I wouldn't hedge any bets on that country.

I like this idea. A majority of Mexicans are hard working family people. Lets get them in on the action.
So are Americans, let’s let them in on the action.

Mexico has to do something about the lack of power they have against the cartels. Companies will not move in droves if there’s always going to be the possibility of loss of product or life in a country run by outlaws.

Support. If we are to make cheap crap with cheap labor in a shithole country I’d rather it be in the Western Hemisphere in a non communist nation.
Mexico has a lot of opportunity. They need to get the cartel problem under control though. They won’t get rid of them, but maybe make a deal for them to keep operations and violence away from major cities and to not interfere with regular folk going to a regular job. For it to work people cannot be in fear of being shot or kidnapped while traveling through Mexico

It's one of the most violent, curropt countries in the world and it's been that way for at ages.
Until you get a handle on both those things it's gonna be a difficult sell to have any real manufacturing done there beyond very basic goods.

think if you consider a “Zero China” policy, the volume of manufacturing would be more than we could handle or want in the U.S. alone. Mexico/Central America may be necessary to achieve that goal.
As with anything, it will be a balancing act.
Manufacture cars, steel, pharmaceuticals, and other necessities in the US.
Manufacture your plastic 19.95 infomercial widgets in Mexico

It’s why we have a war with the cartels. Clean up Mexico so business can move in

This would be incredible for Louisiana ports as well. Let’s do it.

Cars and trucks are not very basic goods.
I've often wondered why the auto manufacturers have no problem producing in Mexico but apparently it is difficult for anyone else to do so.
Granted, the automakers do the designing but Apple doesn't farm out design of iPhones to the Chinaman.

Agree...take out the cartels and everything else falls into place.
