It was a combination of things.
Ted campaigning late, Beto appealing to suburban soccer moms, etc.
One thing some people don’t get is that Trump does turn some people off. I know several pro-life Christian women that were all aboard the Beto train because they’ve been conditioned to believe fake news about Trump and the GOP. A group of my wife’s friends are really socially active Christians and have a text thread where they shite on Trump regularly. My wife is no lover of Trump but she realizes they’re BSC.
Alignment with Trump hurt Cruz. I’m not saying it’s right, I’m saying those people are morons. I get downvoted for saying it, but it’s true.

When Beto ran for Senate his handlers had him on a short leash and he got a lot of cover from the press.....when he ran for President he had to compete with the wackos first and he figured to get the nomination he would have to out wacko.

This was a big win since it was the first big Texas State House win for the republicans ahead of redistricting in 2021. The republicans currently hold a nine seat majority, and the dems are targeting 22 state House seats, all of which had single-digit margins in the 2018 midterm elections. If the dems somehow grab 9 or 10 of those 22 seats, then that is really bad news for the republicans in the upcoming redistricting effort.

This was a low-turnout special election with no party primary, so different dynamic than his previous campaigns.

Oooh, you're right. That is a pretty high number: 30,074 vote total for a state house special election is insane.
I had just looked at the percentages, not the vote totals. The other state house special election we had in Harris County was much lower like a normal special election, but not as hotly contested.

It was 20% of registered voters. Turnout was higher than expected.
