What with the already high rates of cancer along the corridor from Darrow, Convent, Vacherie, etc is this really what Louisiana needs? More CARCINOGENS!?!

I remember when Shintech tried to build a huge complex near this site in the 90’s and the Clinton admin along with Tulane law, Sierra Club and others blocked it on the basis of environmental racism. I hope this doesn’t happen again.

Right next door to the new $1.9 Billion YCI Methanol plant LINK. They actually bought the high school in St. James.
This new plant starts construction in 2019. Here's their response to my email a couple of days ago:
"Thank you for your interest in The Sunshine Project, FG LA LLC’s proposed ethylene complex in St. James Parish, Louisiana. The project is in the permitting phase, and this process can take around one year to complete. Following permit approvals, construction is expected to begin in 2019, and the project is to be developed in two phases. When both are completed, the facility would be one of the most innovative, single-site ethylene production complexes in the world. We will keep the project website updated with new information regarding work with the project and other details as they become available. For more information about The Sunshine Project, please visit www.sunshineprojectla.com." LINK

So this will doubel the tax collections. Will be interesting to see what benefits the St James residents will see from this. I am sure the toads and schools will all benefit....

Rates from 2000, by parish, were considered either "stable" or "declining". Not one showing an upward trend. How these rates compare outside of Louisiana, no clue, but within her borders, no demonstrable increase.

Glad this is being built in Louisiana and not in Texas. Formosa has a big complex in Point Comfort, Tx, near Port Lavaca. They have one of the worst environmental records in the state and are one of, if not THE, most fined company in the state.
They have released benzene, HCL, and spill their plastic pellets in the bay on a regular basis.
They are Asian, and they couldn’t care less about the environment. And they will bring their people over for all their management positions.

Just a side note, these plastic products listed in this paragraph come from oil drilling. Specifically they come from ethane. The methane from the oil well goes to your stove, fertilizer to grow food, electrical turbines for electricity and many, many other applications. The propane goes to your bbq pit and many many other applications. The butane goes into your gas tank during the winter (about 10%) and many many other applications.
But the ethane is never directly sold to consumers. Why? Because plastic manufactures use ethane to produce ethene (aka ethylene) to produce the plastics listed in the paragraph above.
Those "light oils" are isolated at gas plants and sent along. The heavy oils are sent along to refineries to make gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, kerosene, asphalt and many many other products.
All that stuff comes out of an oil well.
