Washington (CNN)The Biden administration is considering using outside firms to track extremist chatter by Americans online, an effort that would expand the government's ability to gather intelligence but could draw criticism over surveillance of US citizens.

The Department of Homeland Security is limited in how it can monitor citizens online without justification and is banned from activities like assuming false identities to gain access to private messaging apps used by extremist groups such as the Proud Boys or Oath Keepers.

DHS officials are exploring ways to enhance the department's information gathering within the bounds of its current authorities, multiple sources told CNN. The department is coordinating with the National Security Council and FBI as part of the effort, sources added.

quote:

If they can find willing external partners that would help provide access to private groups on these encrypted apps, DHS and its federal partners, including the FBI, would be able to legally identify potential domestic terrorists and access information that could inform investigative efforts, a source familiar with the effort told CNN.

quote:

"We are exploring with our lawyers, civil rights, civil liberties and privacy colleagues, how we can make use of outside expertise," the DHS official added, referring to the department's efforts related to encrypted applications.

The problem with that, the source familiar with the effort acknowledged, is DHS would be operating in a space that would likely make civil liberties' advocates, not to mention conservatives', hair stand on end.

Yup. As if liberals ever gave a shite about the Constitution.

We gave the government an opening with the Patriot Act when it was presented under the guise of 'keeping us safe from terrorism.' It paved the way for future surveillance like this of American citizens and is now being weaponized to monitor political opponents under that same 'safety' lie.

How much violence have the "Proud Boy" and "Oathkeeper" boogeymen committed since their inception (whenever that was)?

How much violence have the people associated with the Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and the black nationalist groups committed in the same time frame? I can think of two separate mass shootings of cops in Dallas and Baton Rouge along with numerous riots, murders, assaults, and violent conflicts off the top of my head.

Y'all let me known when those groups assault, vandalize and riot across the country costing tax payers a couple billion dollars.

I don't to seem to recall those groups ever locking in cops and trying to set the building in fire nor see them actively attacking and harassing people on the street or even outside their homes.

Hell I don't recall them ever taking over a few city blocks and establishing a zone.

The federal government has outsourced its tyranny.

We have voluntarily surrendered our privacy to big banks and big tech and they are going to voluntarily hand it over to the deep state.

This makes me so angry I could spit

They can just copy off their buds at the State Dept, CIA, DNI.

The FISA court wrote them another nasty gram strongly worded letter after the 99 page one Obama got.

So Biden (who claims to not know nuffin that the DOJ & FBI are doing--until it is in the news) Got caught again.

The very raw nerve to put this out that they will hire others to entrap domestic terrorist Trump voters is astounding.

I seem to recall one of the things Adm Rogers (and possibly Flynn) stopped was private contractors were getting access to the NSA database.

So weird that domestic terrorism is only a thing during a Dem/Socialist administration...

All the while, lefties are shooting Republican senators and congressmen while Antifa is tourching cities.

Strange

Absolutely. You give the govt an inch and they'll take a mile. Covid obviously being a mainstream example of where our rights were taken in the name of "safety." The NFA is another example although I wasn't around during that time it was certainly an infringement on our right to bear arms. And now pistol braces and someday semi auto weapons will all be considered NFA items.... In the name of safety and security of course.

Regardless of your political beliefs.. hopefully we can see that the government is already waaaay too big and needs to be reigned in before it's too late. More power to surveil and make people disappear in the middle of the night for any reason they choose is not a good thing no matter how you spin it.

Ah yes!

As if warrantless spying on Americans by its own government wasn’t enough, let’s build up an entire network of private spy companies to eavesdrop on Americans too!

They already are doing this with amazon, at&t, Verizon, Twitter, Facebook, google, etc. and the use of these companies and the coordination will only increase.

There is an unholy alliance laced with tyranny and authoritarianism forming between Big Tech and the government. It’s mutually beneficial to both.

Pretty sure that actively engaging 3rd parties to assist in circumventing constitutional protections is a big no no.
