There’s multiple people in here with firsthand accounts of paying fat more than $12,000 a year for health insurance
The words are "average" and "per capita".

Is the AVERAGE family of four paying $48K/yr?

He's not wrong. I have great insurance but what I kick in monthly to the employer's plan plus co-pays and deductibles, he is generally correct.

What the hell is going on here? Government programs and paperwork. How many government bureaucrats salary are included in that.
I was eighteen years old before I visited my first MD. Pre-College physical.
Maybe folks with risky life styles should pay more.

$48K still seems high but not that far off.
Wait!
You're actually proposing Medicare tax approaches an average of $28K/family?

Let's not guess then. Here are the actual numbers:

• There are 83.09 million families in the United States
• The average family size is 3.14 persons
• That accounts for 80% of Americans
• IAW Bernie's claim, the AVERAGE family of 3.14 persons pays $37,680 per year for healthcare.
• The average Medicare tax is $979 per household.

In Bernie's Democratic Socialist America, you'll only need to pay for the bullet they shoot you with when you get sick...

Bernie cutting costs!

There is no way. Medicare is 6.2% of income. That would be gross income of $15,790
quote:

For Medicare, the total payroll tax collected in 2016 (the most recent year with complete data) divided by the number of American households shows an average Medicare tax of $979 per household. This is consistent with a 2017 Medicare tax estimate of about $769 per worker, since the BLS approximates there are 1.3 workers per household.

This whole thing is a math equation. Bernie needs to dumb it down even more so idiots supporting our current HC/HI problems will understand. It's simple.Ex: I'm paying $12,000 a year now in premiums and deductables. Next year I don't pay $12,000 but my taxes go up $5000(I'm considered middle class) that's $7000 more in pocket.

If he used the term “healthcare”, and not “health insurance”, I would imagine that he is correct. As someone earlier stated, that is a big difference.

I mean, we could change Bernie's statement to:

The average american that pays for his healthcare and subsidizes the healthcare of those that pay nothing, pays $12,000/year on healthcare.

It would still be wrong, but I don't think that is the message he wants to be pushing to get people on board for Medicare for all

If you included the amount we pay, and the amount my wife's employer pays, for our family coverage, it's over $1,000 a month for just health insurance.

It's closer to $1200 a month if we include dental, vision, etc.

But that's for an entire family, not a single American.

The problem is that averages are going to be brought down by students, retirees, and tons of non-working people. It's basically a meaningless stat to look at an overall average applied to every single American.

So we agree, he is wrong.

I am middle class and I am not a student or a retiree. I probably pay damn near close to $12K

I pay less than $4k per year, including my HSA contribution.
