More inflationary dumbassery from our Bay area friends. Should do wonders for their tax base, reap what you sow.

quote:

City Council on Tuesday night unanimously voted to ban gas from new low-rise residential buildings, starting Jan. 1, 2020.

quote:

The natural gas ordinance, introduced by Councilwoman Kate Harrison, requires all new single-family homes, town homes and small apartment buildings to have electric infrastructure. After its passage, Harrison thanked the community and her colleagues “for making Berkeley the first city in California and the United States to prohibit natural gas infrastructure in new buildings.”

They're going to add to the bill to include all new commercial and industrial builds.

Does anybody know how their electric grid is powered? Will this even decrease there use of natural gas?

What’s wrong with natural gas? I thought it burned cleaner.

It's a push to have energy produced in the manner they want it produced not if clean or not.

I’m sure the 300 gallon above ground propane tanks will really help the property values.

What a pile of worthless fricks.

I wonder what the reasoning was..

Perhaps not having to deal with potential problems with an ageing infrastructure in the future? I hope it was something arguable not not climate change shite.

The probably is not with this bill it’s that it’s how after a few years they want to mandate it on the rest of the country.

My favorite part of that article is that it creates a new government job that pays $245K to enforce it. It's another corpratist b.s. bill that will help line the pockets of their chosen "green" technologies. Natural gas is the future they are not going to move the needle pushing bills like this and it only hurts their ability to raise taxes and create jobs.

Remember that Cali is also the state that has all but banned wood heat. Even though wood produces virtually no noxious gasses it's still banned.

Yay! Back to burning coal or kerosene. Better yet, all new homes should come with a hobo burn barrel in the living room.

In June 2018, the council declared a climate emergency and called for a review of Berkeley’s greenhouse emission reduction strategies. The city determined in a report last year that gas-related emissions have increased due to an 18% population growth since 2000. The report also concluded that the burning of natural gas within city buildings accounted for 27% of Berkeley’s total greenhouse gas emissions in 2016.

“To put that in context, (the 27%) is equivalent to 20 million gallons of gasoline a year,” Harrison said.

The very next paragraph talks about how high the demand for new housing has been lol that should help with their high prices!
