Before we pay out reparations, we must deduct damages

San Francisco is proposing a reparations payout of $5 million to each black resident. No doubt many will want this on a national scale.

I say let's go for it. End the angst against the awful white people once and for all. But first, we must look at the damages that have been done to majority black cities as they've been out of the hands of evil white people for decades.

Can anyone add up the financial damage done to the following places?

Detroit
Chicago
Atlanta
New Orleans
St Louis
Memphis
Baltimore
Birmingham
Montgomery
Jackson
Cleveland
Newark
Washington DC
Philadelphia

How much damage have these cities suffered at the hands of black residents and leaders? And how much will they continue to suffer because of them? Hundreds of billions, trillion? I'm guessing once the damages are added up, the people expecting reparations would be in the red.

Can we also subtract any government assistance ever used from that total?

Bro, I'm black and I'm terrified of reparations. This should have been done in 1900, not 2023. This will create racial animosity like we've never seen before.

This can't happen. It just can't.

I'm not black, but I agree fully with you. This would create a level of animosity off the charts to anything seen in our history. I'm trying to avoid hyperbole when I say it could lead to actual armed conflict.

Lolwut?! God damn they are mentally ill if this is true. I'd be interested in reading a link if you have one on hand.

I have a fun little scenario to think about if this is true. I'd be willing to bet that 95% of single parent homes with multiple children that received $5 million will be back below the poverty line within 2 generations. I'd place the same bet on low-income, single parent white households as well FWIW.

We're already at
quote:

It’s OK to be white.” Even a majority of blacks, 53%, agreed.

I consider the shark jumped. The vast majority of people can't even classify what "white" means. The poor Italian assholes working the shipyards? The poor Irish assholes walking the beat? The Eastern Europeans working in the mills and factories in the Midwest?

ETA: I forgot about the coal miners... Listen to Darryl Cooper's "Whose America" podcast (the prologue and Ep1, which is seven hours of content, is free on his MartyrMade feed from 2022. He's smart AF, and very engaging.)

It's just an extension of the old argument that "the rich" are anyone that makes $5k a year more than you. Doesn't matter if you make 30k, 100k. It's always "those people."

Thinking like that is certainly poisonous, but we've been doing it for a long, long time. Social media has helped perfect the delivery of the message.

First off, how would this be handed out?

Exactly how much black is enough to qualify? Do you have to prove you are a descendant of a slave or do black immigrants from actual Africa qualify as well? What if you’re a Mexican or South American black that came over here 10 years ago? Does that qualify as well? Or is all that needs to be shown is a skin pigmentation that meets a range set on a color palette, and what about dark skinned people from the Middle East? Can they pass themselves off as black and get 5 million too?

this might yet be the most incredibly racist thing government has ever done, and that’s saying a lot because from slavery to segregation, government has done a lot.

All we need is the nearly hundred classifications of heritage like the Mexicans used to determine Indian/Mestizo blood versus "proper Spaniard" blood.

Kinda like the Nazi purity tests, but more complicated.

And I kinda feel like the Nigerian accountants I know would tell everyone to F right off if someone tried to pay "reparations" to them. Or at least their parents would beat the ever loving crap out of them if they accepted!

While we're at it, I would like to be paid for the work my forefathers did on the Pyramids, and having to wander in the desert for decades

That's the problem.

Everybody can agree that black folks took a fricking for a long time in the US. And, the fricking didn't stop in 1865. However, the country has been paying reparations to the poor for a long time. Although it isn't specific to descendants of slaves, it serves the same purpose.

The problem is where do you draw the line? How far back does the world go fixing past wrongs? Who pays? Why is this seem to be portrayed as a US specific issue? Does Palestine get their shite back? Do descendants of slaves in South America or the Middle East or Asia or Africa get reparations from the US too?

And, to expound upon LordSaintly's point, can you fricking imagine a world where certain black folks get a lump sum of money and others don't? Or, where all black folks get a chunk, leaving poor people of all other races the only remaining poor?

I've got a friend whose family immigrated here in the 70's who has talked about getting his check.

Nobody sees pell grants or other reparations for the poor as a reparations. Further, nobody sees affirmative action as reparations.

What about subsequent generations? Will they just stfu bc granny got a check that she fricking blew?

Fixing every past wrong sounds awesome on paper.

These are all solid points about the complexity of this. It is basically impossible.

Not only that, this government fricked up giving out Covid handouts, which are elementary in comparison.

The legal principle of causation is what is supposed to stop non-sense like this, but it's being conveniently ignored.

I would hate to see the unintended consequences of this. It would be on a scale much larger than anyone could even fathom. Especially when the people that have never had money start flaunting it like all of the rappers do? You can take somebody out of the hood, but you can't take the hood out of people. Black people will continue being theor own worst enemy.

You could take all the money in the world and split it up evenly. For the most part the end result is gonna be the same people having the money.

Prolonged gratification, a humble life style, hard work, intelligence and sometimes blind arse luck increase wealth. It’s that simple.

Hell. 1 or 2 outta 5 will probably get you by

It would for sure be an interesting and entertaining simulation to watch. $5 million in the wrong hands would disappear faster than Nick Cannon on fathers day.

A fool and his money are soon parted, that will always be the case. It doesn't matter how much money either, look at people like Vince Young, Adrian Peterson, Burt Reynolds, etc.
