“Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain.“

He belongs to that pantheon that includes Lord Acton and the forgotten William Leggett. Lysander Spooner is another great one.

In my backwards radical fundamentalist homeschool group in the 80s, we read The Law and gave speeches on it.

I can't believe the government still allows people to teach their own kids. Look at the crazy right-wing propaganda they're programmed with!

"The Law" is one of the best books ever written on the role of government in society.

quote:

Perverted Law Causes Conflict

As long as it is admitted that the law may be diverted from
its true purpose—that it may violate property instead of protecting it—then everyone will want to participate in making the law,
either to protect himself against plunder or to use it for plunder.
Political questions will always be prejudicial, dominant, and all absorbing. There will be fighting at the door of the Legislative
Palace, and the struggle within will be no less furious. T

TigerDawg is correct. It's very close to small 'l' libertarian. The core philosophy of both was:
'Take care of your own damn self.'
