I write this as a scientist very familiar with automation, not as a social engineer. At one time in my career I formed to process automation group for a Fortune 500 chemical company. Why form the group? To save the company MONEY.

Automation is all about money. Doing the same task cheaper means the owner can sell the same product for less than can the non-automated competition. Then, say by-by to the competition.

An example: A cruise ship I was on a few months ago has an automatic bartender. Insert your sea card (an on-board credit card, tied to one of your credit cards), press a few buttons to order what you want, the machine makes your drink, "hands" it to you, and charges your sea card. The cruise line pockets the savings, a compatriot of AOC is out of a job, and is on the unemployment line. And the people displaced by automation? We keep hearing the phrase "retraining programs" but retrain for what jobs? Will there be fewer jobs available? Probably, at least in the short term. What about the jobs that are available? Probably lower skills will be required, which usually means lower paying.

Some higher paying jobs? Someone has to design, test, produce, and maintain these contraptions. Our colleges are failing in producing graduates capable of filling this need. A large portion of the blame for this has to fall on the "take the easy road" students themselves. Avoiding the math and science needed for these jobs and taking courses in advanced basket weaving instead may leave them ill-prepared for the jobs that are available.

This leads us to be dependent on other countries for these needs. Hopefully, Trump's immigration reforms will be adopted, and bring more of these needs in-house.

Just as the industrial revolution changed America, the automation revolution we ARE ALREADY IN (Ford, GM, etc. say hello) will almost assuredly change us again. Into what? I leave that to the social scientists, and politicians. Too much depends on what the government, our educational system, and THE AMERICAN PEOPLE do for me to hazard a scientific guesstimate.

Many more of you TDers education and experience would make you far better predictors. I look forward to your synopses.

Innovation has always changed the job market and the ones who want to work always adapt. This has been true for thousands of years. Tractors killed thousands of farm labor jobs, railroad killed thousands of stage coach jobs, etc.

You ever see that Twilight Zone episode from the 50's about early automation?

It's hard core. I recommend checking it out.

definitely is. As long as companies need to meet stock investors demands, I don't really see things changing much.

Good jobs are to come back, but were are to innovative "to make things easier/faster/more efficient" to not be constantly chasing it. It's in our genes. Why the chinese need to be stopped if we still want to be the worlds power. Stopped before they change their way of being long term. They are to young in this way to fully understand how to adjust as they havent had to since they came into the wto.

Absolutely correct. And then, there was very few social programs other than the churches to help the displaced. Today, what this may lead to are massive social programs. Got a guess on what will happen?

Sorry to disappoint, but no, I got promoted, and was moved on up the food chain. Saving the company money has it's rewards.

I will admit you hate to see it's effect on your fellow workers.

BTW, you got my up vote, not the down vote.

Well gee, here's a stumper for you: What is the entire purpose of any company? (hint: has to do with money)

I have never seen a private company whose intent and purpose is to create jobs for the sake of creating jobs. Matter of fact, that sounds more like govt. than even our local, state, and federal govt. does! The creation of jobs just for the sake of job creation sounds more communistic than the USSR in its heyday even.

I can't wait for the robots to take over so i can tend my garden, fish everyday, and collect checks. Besides at some point they'll realize the Sun has more energy and they'll build a rocket ship, all of them will leave to get more energy and they'll fly too close to it.

Absolutely! And automation is one of the major tools available to do just that.

I can't wait unit technology is advanced enough for me to purchase a automated twin of me and I can do my hobbies all day long as they go to work. I might get two or three.

The conundrum for business is that if society becomes too automated then your customer base may diminish due to the lack of jobs.

You'd be surprised how many people think that's why a business exists....I wish I were kidding...

I like the idea. I'd like to have one too, even though I'm retired. Then I could play golf and bridge at the same time.

Capitalism is all about making markets more efficient.

Automation helps to do that.

Absolutely correct. And with more efficiency comes winners and losers. You hope automation helps make you one of the winners.
