It sucks but that’s life. When he was a kid Austin wasn’t that expensive. Then, all the California hipsters moved and drove up prices. Happening in a lot of metropolitan areas.
He got priced out of his city. He should move somewhere cheaper and/or get a better job.
another anecdotal story was that i was at a conference and talking to one of my reps and his assistant (young 20 yo UT grad) he was giving her a hard time about still having a roommate and not getting a house. she said 'i couldn't even afford to move to Kyle or Buda."
"i said bullcrap. you just want a nice house in Kyle and Buda. i guarantee that some 1200 sq foot 3/2 is not that much"
then we pulled up zillow again, and SOB, she was right. absolutely nothing below $250k

I don’t get the hate. I’ve never dealt with any extreme politics there.
Austin let BLM run wild and arrested a soldier who defended himself against the angry, armed mob. One of Alex Jones' reporters was just murdered. Not sure if it was because of his right leaning politics or the city's left leaning soft on crime politics. I think Teslas in Austin have been vandalized as well.
Maybe those aren't considered extreme, though.

Austin destroyed the skyline when they lifted the ban. All that has done is bring in more tards. Austin is no longer what it was 15-20 years ago and it will never be what it was. It's now just like every other big city and has nearly lost it's unique identity. So much so that you don't ever hear or see the Keep Austin Weird slogan anymore. The influx of Californians killed that and brought all their stupid shite with them.

Trump.... manufacturing
Agreed, but sad thing is these people think they're above manufacturing.
They'll refuse to work the jobs.
I'm still all on bringing manufacturing home, but these people will be dragged kicking and screaming to them.

i strongly dislike Austin (i live about 45 miles north of there) and avoid it like the plague, but if Portland/Seattle/San Franciscos are 8-10s on the crazy scale, Austin is a 5-6

I'm shocked.
Not at the OP's story, but by the fact that half the responses aren't "That never happened".

Safe bet this guy works the counter at an arcade because of some combination of not finishing high school, being lazy as frick, and/or not being able to pass a drug test.
Most likely not. He probably has a college degree in a field that no longer hires people with a bachelors and got tired of being a cook or a waiter.

What is the answer? What would you recommend Trump do that completely pulls the rug out from under the Dems and where people in these conditions can say, "The Dems never gave me these options. Only Trump. I'll never vote Dem, again."
A good start is the no tax on tips, overtime and SS. That's real, tangible change that will affect a lot of people and change a lot of votes. And if he can ever eliminate income tax look out
Posted on 3/31/25 at 4:23 pm to HubbaBubba
That's what Democrats do in every large metro city.
Make all the housing insanely high, force the minorities outside the city limits, and then make them commute into the city to work for them.
And yet people still vote for the that kind of treatment.

They'll refuse to work the jobs.

Sounds like he just needs tax free gratuity and overtime. Let him earn his income at an even lower ETR and that should motivate him...or so I hear.

Austin is a good place to live
It's a shite hole

No it's not. I get that you hate it because the lib presence there, but Austin is a cool town in a great area of Texas. The Hill Country is beautiful and lots to do outdoors in nature there. And really good BBQ.

Newflash, every bigger city that is cool, and tons of people want to live there, has traffic problems.
shite, Baton Rouge has some of the worst traffic I have ever been in, consistently, maybe the worst, and there is NOTHING about Baton Rouge that makes putting up with that worth it.

He dead-panned, "Austin ain't frickin' Dallas, man. My apartment rent is $1500 a month and I have to work two jobs to afford it AND split rent with my brother. That's the cheapest rent you can find here, man."
The guy is a product.of Obama administration that believes they are suppose.to make a living wage off part time, no skilled jobs. Remember Obama saying the guy flipping burger should be making a living wage? This was the start of the $15 then $20 minimum wage argument.
As I predicted then, a $20 hr job today is the same as a $10 hr job back in 2012. You get paid more but now your expenses are higher and you pay higher taxes on top of it.

Nah. It's definitely changed... but it's still a really cool place with a lot of interesting stuff going on, great food scene, lots of events and fun things to do, insane music scene, and the geography is beautiful if you like being out in nature, on the water etc. I hate libs too but not every MFer in Austin is a lib and all aspects of the city aren't political.

i know a really sharp phd with a few full sleeves.
Not nearly as much stigma around arm sleeves as there used to be. Plus those can be covered by sleeves if and when needed. I was more referring to things like neck tats, septum piercings, lip rings, big gauge holes in ear lobes, etc when talking about limiting their employability.
