Atlantic Council Neocon Creep Says We Need 100K US Troops To Maintain Order In Venezuela

Dan Goldwyn was his name, I think. Just now on the BBC.
He heads up the Atlantic Council's (a neocon NGO) oil research group.
Says to keep Venezuela from remaining like it was, or descending worse into chaos and disorder, and to do anything productive at all with the oil will require 100K US troops to provide security, order, infrastructure, etc.
Said Venezuela is inundated with Cuban spies and paramilitaries, drug gang militias, criminals, and significant domestic military presence that will lay low now but will rise in the coming months to get their piece of money and power.
Said no oil companies, including Chevron (the biggest footprint there) will make the necessary long term investments unless there is order and and security.
Said there will need to be a long term...10-20 year....significant US military presence of around 100K troops.

A lot of what he says is true, but I question the solution of "100k US troops for 20 years."
There are lots of options short of that ... which would achieve the same aims.
But I DO think that a few divisions of US troops MAY be necessary in the very short term, if we want to prevent chaos.

Not really sure why OP is being downvoted. We’ve created a power vacuum like we did in Iraq. Thinking we will somehow control everything with no actual presence is pure fantasy.

They will keep the current military and just fire/arrest the top brass.
They will be loyal to whomever is paying them.

Most of them would be OK, but you have to find the 10-20% that are hard-core PSUV-types and purge them, along with ALL the flag officers.
Hell, you probably need to purge half or more of the field grade officers and a MUCH smaller percentage of the company grade officers.
The interim period to do that is when you need foreign (presumably American, at least in part) troops.
