Why use one Arabic word, that means "God" in English in an American pledge? Seems like it would just confuse a bunch of kids.
Allah is in the English dictionary.

Definition please? Root of the word please?
Posted on 9/10/14 at 11:06 am to Lg
noun
1.
the Supreme Being; God.
The root is arabic, but it is spelled Allah with a different inflection over the "a".
The word God has multiple roots in Old English, Dutch, German, etc. Should we recite it in any of those languages?
You're being willfully obtuse and trying to deflect the argument. A democrat would be proud of such deflection.
The point is, there is no reason to agree with this practice, accept that you agree because they are using YOUR god.
If it was Allah or Shiva, you would be pissed as all hell.

This is all I needed to know.

No deflection here. If the words mean the same, why not use the one I prefer. You're the one trying to deflect. If I was Jewish, I might prefer to use Yahweh. But that's neither here nor there. Now calling me a democrat is a little out of line.

Do you understand why "so help me God" is in an oath? It invokes that, if I break my oath, there is an ultimate Judge I will have to answer to. I understand that atheist are their own ultimate judge, so why not, when taking an oath, just think about when saying "God" you are just swearing by yourself.

Why should the atheist have to make accommodations to suit someone else's beliefs?

frick, why doesn't he just say it. It's not a big deal. Say it to keep your job. If my boss comes in and asks what I'm doing, I don't say "posting on tigerdroppings". You don't have to be a bastion of honesty 25 hours a day.

Well it's called living in a democracy. And as bad as I hate it sometimes, majority rules in most cases. When the number of atheist outnumber the number of people who have some belief in God then you can make all the rules apply in whatever capacity you would like. If an Armed Services branch wants to invoke God into it's oath, then choose another branch that suits your fancy. Is the Marine's creed still "God, Corps and Country." Where is the outrage? Are there not atheist marines? Why should the believers have to make accommodations to suit someone's non-belief?

Because he's constitutionally protected from having to.
Why do you hate the constitution?

No it doesn't. Our government is specifically structured to prevent that.

Because we don't live in Iran.

I don't. When has Congress passed a law requiring worship of One God?

And it did such a bang up job protecting us from Obamacare, didn't it? Majority rules.

I'd imagine that without oaths to God, we probably wouldn't need an Air Force..

Christian "morality" everyone

Maybe you should actually read the first amendment

Why are witnesses allowed to affirm instead of swearing an oath? What prevents public school teachers from evangelizing in class?

Majority rules.
California and Prop 8 disagree.

I don't know if I've ever read such bullshite in my life.

I did. Congress may have thought by not allowing the AF to invoke God into it's oath it would be infringing upon the 1st Amendment right, that Congress shall pass no law "impeding the free exercise of religion." Dang it. We almost always forget that part.

How would not forcing an atheist to swear an oath to god impede the free exercise of anyone's religion?
