I really liked the way he played it straight with his guests, letting them speak their piece, and leaving it to the callers to ridicule or skewer the guests.

I think part of Art's fame was the fact that his show was at that time unique. Now, with podcast and a saturation of UFO programs on tv, it's much harder to set yourself apart.

This is the part of listening to Coast to Coast that still amazes me. I'll listen to a caller, and no matter how outrageous the caller's story, there is never any type of skepticism shown by the host.

Caller; I was just eaten and regurgitated by a polka dotted monkey beast.

Host: How large were the spots?!

It was actually entertaining before George Snoory flattened it. Art Bell made the supernatural, the paranormal, the extraterrestrial an essential component of my daily existence.

Listened to him a lot when I worked nights. He was always entertaining and there were some classic shows that would still be interesting to go back and listen to again sometime.

I remember Art mostly for this:

He use to play a phone recording of a guy who was calling his boss telling him he was going to be late for work. In the middle of explaining why he was going to be late he witnesses a car accident between a red neck and two old ladies. The guy on the phone gives a hysterical play by play description of what is going on. The red neck approaches the car and one the little old ladies gets out and starts hitting him with an umbrella. The red neck starts to run back to his truck but falls. The lady keeps beating him with the umbrella. In the mean time the other little old lady grabs a bible out of the car and starts beating him with the bible. The description was one of the funniest things I have ever heard.

I found and downloaded a copy of this and listened to it at least twenty time. I laughed just as hard the twentieth time as I did the first.

Thanks Art for bringing a little levity into our lives and a little weirdness too.

Note: I have lost that recording.

I'd be driving to the lake to go fish at 4am and he'd be the only thing on. I always thought the cat was weird.

I did 4 years on rotating 12's at the Exxon refinery during the mid 90's.

Art was a true friend during those 6PM to 6AM shifts.

I suppose, in a way, but Art Bell covered so many more different things. You never knew what you were going to hear. Some of his established guests were always interesting. A one time per generation class act imo.

I'm not trying to diminish him in any way. He was definitely a pioneer and a great talk show host.

One of my favorite episodes was about a man who claimed he had a Bigfoot body frozen in this garage freezer and the FBI or some other agency was after him to steal it.

I 'member that one! Every now and then he would update his "Bottomless hole" with demonic sounds coming from it. That one was always creepy.
