Wikipedia: First paragraph explains the name
quote:

Early French explorers gave the territory its name, a corruption of Akansea, which is a phonetic spelling from the Illinois language word for the Quapaw.

Les called Arkansas “R-Kansas” before the game in 2007 and then Arkansas got that wood and almost knocked LSU out of the national championship.

Regarding the pronunciation, DMAC cleared it up.

And "Kansas" is also in the name "Arkansas".

The names of the states actually have completely different origins.

It would make total sense that they would be pronounced differently.

Do you say Kansas or Kansaw?

Arkansas and Kansas have completely different etymological origins.

So it's irrelevant how they say Kansas.

No one from New Orleans or the surround area, or the rest of the state for that matter, ever says this.

It’s pronounced Ar-Kan-Saw and people from Arkansas are called Ar-Kansans

While that may be, you can see where the question comes from since only 2 letters at the start differentiate them.

Also, if you break it down, we do have words from this:

ark - a type of boat
Kansas - a state in the US
