Most are, yes.

Even the ones who agree with me.

And the sad reality is that those with good intentions quickly find no path forward without compromising on some of their constituent demands/desires. So they're left with trying to make some deals to advance part of the agenda or getting bounced, knowing that progress becomes even less likely.

And the sadder reality is that the above reality will be used as cover for the bad-intentioned, self-interested politicians as to why they won't even make the effort.

We are a selfish, short attention span and hypocritical people. That's reflected in our leaders, and it's reflected in the demands we place on the few leaders who actually try to represent us well.

The sooner we all accept this and stop fighting for one pile of shite side over the other, the better we are.

They all screw us, they all are there for their own power and greed fixes.

Now, there may be one or two that are decent folks, but I doubt they stay that way.

Yes but it doesn't stop gullible people from worshipping those same politicians who don't care about them and are supposed to actually work for the people.

Every single person I've known who went into politics is a schemer, and none of the smartest people I went to high school/undergrad/law school with went into politics.

It goes like this:
Getting elected is expensive. There is no office that pays more in salary than the cost it takes to successfully campaign for the office. As such, to get elected, one must rely on donations from other people or a vast family fortune. In addition, running for a major office is basically a full time job from qualifying to election day, which means you can’t really do much work at a day from from July to October. Not many people have a flexible enough day job to do that. In addition, if you work for the government, you must completely resign your position before qualifying, further limiting the pool of candidates.

Finally, those folks who donate, by and large, don’t do so for no reason. They donate to candidates that support their financial interests or social agenda. Thus, the only people donating large sums to campaigns are ones who depend on government intervention in the marketplace or on government sponsored social programs for their fortunes. As such, to get elected, candidates who are not already, themselves, f$&k you rich, must solicit those donors for money in exchange for favors once elected.

The system is essentially designed to elect the most spineless and corrupt among us while ensuring the common man has no real ability to successfully run for anything. This is in stark contrast to how American elections were structured by the founding fathers. Districts were purposely kept small enough that outside of races for governor and president, it was feasible for politicians to literally meet in person every voter they represented. The capacity to do so made expensive advertising much less expensive and much less necessary.

Today, Congressmen represent roughly 700k people each. There’s just no way to win those races every two years without millions of dollars worth of tv and print ads and mailers.

I would say some probably started off with good intentions then had to play the game for their own personal gain.

So yes they all are after becoming politicians.
