There’s bound to be 15 - 20 experts on the topic on every board on Tigerdroppings. So you probably won’t have to go far.

Good luck though, seriously.

Call the HR dept of your old employers and ask who is the custodian for their 401(k). From there, call said custodians and ask them to search by your name and social.

Thanks appreciate it. I’m assuming the custodians are the companies the above poster was listing?

Yeah that’s the ticket, I think. Poster meant your former employer who administered the account, ostensibly the former employer who was matching funds.

Get your IRS wage and income transcript. Retirement account fiduciaries are required to issue a tax form showing the year end balance each year.

It’s possible that it’s on your tax transcript. Likely not since it is generating taxable transactions, but I have seen the accounts on them. Create an IRS account, your transcripts are there.

That is assuming you can’t call the old plan admin (former employer that started the plan) to access your account. The employer is the sponsor and are obligated to keep the records.

If they terminated the plan, unclaimed property in the state the company was in.

They aren’t always there, but agreed this is the first place I would check as it would provide the fiduciary
