Also-I have Vietnam-related PTSD but it's related to my Vietnamese wife.

I hear that’s the worst kind.

I won’t go into antidepressants since you didn’t mention them. Suffice it to say it’s taken three years to find the most effective combination, and we’re still tweaking it.

Been on every one probably. I have one now but don't take it. Excuse my words here, but I'll sufer to keep my sex drive and penis working, by not taking them.

Combat infantryman. One year Vietnam in Northern I Corps. Quang Tri Province in 1969 in all the usual places: Con Thien, Cam Lo, Dong Ha, Rockpile. Still not dead yet. Absolutely no PTSD, but the ocassional weird dreams like the faceless NVA lone soldier coming in through the bathroom window of my house. Loud noises used to set me off years ago, but damn, man, it’s been A HALF A CENTURY. Time to get over it.

Holy crap! An 0311 here, 1969, in Kilo 3/9, Stud, Signal Hill, Rockpile, Cam Lo, Khe Sanh (post siege).

Yeah, gooks surround my house every now and then at night, and time has indeed healed most everything. The Agent Orange bit me pretty bad though.

Semper Fi old timers. 0369 here. (Enlisted O341 then 0331 when I re-enlisted and completed advanced machine gunnery school). Years in service - 1991 - 2003.

My father was 0311 - Dying Delta 1/5 in Vietnam.

Kill!

Long story short, I went to counseling for it. Realized I was depressed and had learned to bottle up all my feelings.

The courage involved in taking that step can’t be overstated.
I’m so glad it helped you.

I’ve found that the most insidious aspects of mental illness are (a) symptoms hit out of the blue, usually at the worst possible moments; (b) people who are experiencing unspeakable pain have to somehow figure out how to function, then suck it up and find a provider(s) on whom to dump your soul; (c) stick with the appointments (I’m notorious for having an anxiety attack in the parking garage at the dr.’s office and canceling my appt); and (d) remain compliant on multiple medications that seem to affect you differently each day.

I’ve said enough/too much.
I pray that those of you who hurt remember that you’re never alone.

My dad was an ordinance man on the USS Shangri-La and passed the equator twice in Vietnam. He experienced a depression his entire life not knowing how many women and children those bombs he loaded killed.

And as much as he hated the left and what they stand for; he tell you he would lay down his life for them to say it. I wish sometimes it went both ways...

I hear you.
They affect me similarly.

Interestingly enough, the one I currently take clearly acts on the part of the brain that enjoys alcohol.
I’ve long been a snobby, boutique cocktail drinking mixologist (don’t judge; I am a chick after all).
But the desire for even a sip of wine now turns my stomach.

Again ... it’s that fascinating brain chemistry.

As bad as Vietnam was and the way it is demonized, there are still cherished memories about life-long bonds made and some hilarious mome

I have those as well, especially during my time at PI. I am still in touch with some, who are left, that came through my Plt and others who were added in country to replace those who could go no further. Those are some of the pleasant memories back then.

Semper Fi, but I was Army (5th Inf Div). Sounds like we were in the same Area of Operations around the same time. Funny though, I don’t recall Agent Orange being used anywhere in Quang Tri Province from the mountains near Laos to the South China Sea. Certainly it got sprayed all around Danang and Phu Bai where all sorts of Marine units went through.

Yes, around Khe Sanh and west of the Rockpile we ran several ops through heavily defoliated forests and elephant grass. Slept on that soil, bathed and drank from the streams, etc. Deemed positive decades later and had heart damage from it. I was wounded twice, by rockets and grenades, but none of it harmed me like Agent Orange.

One of the funniest sights I ever saw was at JOTC/Ft Sherman during jungle warfare school. Part of the training was a combat swim in BDUs/boots after making your ruck somewhat floatable with wet weather bags and ponchos. Had a black PFC that was solid as a rock on land, but he hit that water and it looked like the Tasmanian devil. Spinning, flailing, water going everywhere. He almost levitated out of it.
