How many announcements like this happened under Trump's first term that never came to fruition? Same for Biden? It doesn't matter until anything is actually built. Anyone can say they are going to invest 'billions' doing it is another matter.

Tariffs are taxes.

Call it whatever you want = what tariffs are is a tool to encourage consumers to purchase US produced products rather than foreign.
Their intent is to lessen the impact of cheap foreign labor on our US producer base.

for instance = if a company starts producing and selling plastic yo-yos for $2 and Mongolia can use slave labor and sell identical yo-yos for 25cents, then the US company would go our for business UNLESS that badman POTUS Trump slapped $1.75 tariff on the Mongiolisn yo-yos,

The consumer is 'cheated' out of the opportunity to buy a yo-yo for a quarter, but the US manufacturer of yo-yos can stay in business and pay employees.
This is good for the US business climate.

NOW - if you want to reduce the COST of everything then you are going to have to look at the DEMOCRAT actions over the past few decades - They are holding on to power - and seeking MORE power - but just making stuff FREE for the 'underclass' where they get all their political power.

This is communist/socialist playbook - make everything FREE and get their $$ from the billionaires thru even more taxation.

History has shown that this is the death-knell for any government. The first year of communist-socialism is the best it will ever be. What must happen for it to survive is that businesses begin going bankrupt, thereby producing more ex-workers who get the free welfare, until their are not enough people paying the exorbitant taxes to maintain the previous standard of living.

Common sense leads you to that conclusion - but in modern politics, especially democrat politics, NOTHING they say is true or in line with common sense - it is always just word salad with no substance or logic or truth.

You go communist and within a decade you live in a poverty state with over 3/4 of the population living off 'welfare.'

At the very least let's try and make sure that the Chinese aren't manufacturing our nuclear power plant components for us.

A centrally planned economy from THIS gov’t? No thanks.

Tariffs = less competition and higher prices just like any other gov’t barrier to entry.

They can’t have Chinese components under FEOC.

How much more are you paying in taxes on your daily used goods cause of tariffs?

So the electricity generated by these plants will be free to the consumer?

That's not even the biggest problem with these "tariff home runs."

The biggest problem is that virtually all of the actual projects are subject to "commercial viability," "commercial and legal review," etc.

They aren't guaranteed by anyone's definition of the word.

So every one of them could change their mind pending the next POTUS election. There's very little chance that even a leftist Democrat POTUS would keep what Trump has in place right now (too leftist for them)—Biden kept most of Trump's first term tariffs in place, but these are far more extreme—and it's also unlikely that any Republican POTUS would keep them either.

So it's very likely that most of these "pledges" will just wait for the clock to run out and then renege.

Even if they don't, nobody ever claimed that tariffs couldn't force manufacturing or industry back state side. Only that doing so is a wealth redistribution scheme on par with Obamacare.

The idiots crow about these things while forgetting that American citizens paid and will continue to pay for it.

The exact amount of all the money that has been collected in tariffs so far divided by around 340 million.

I don't know what that running total is, but that's your answer.

By making the products more expensive. It's basically the government collecting extra money from all Americans and then distributing it to a few of them (the manufacturing base).

Just like Obamacare.

It's a leftist wealth redistribution scheme, which is why the other POTUS candidate who advocated for them along with Trump in 2016 was Bernie Sanders, self described Democratic Socialist.

CNN doesn't have their own math. There's only one math. And the equation is pretty simple.

Switched alters for this reply, eh?

Home and auto insurance, shipping, medical care (and therefore health insurance as well), home repairs, rent (both residential and commercial), new and used car prices, utilities, prescription drugs, funeral costs, air travel, etc. are all heavily burdened by the tariffs because we get medical supplies, auto parts, machinery, plastics, and essential chemicals from China.

And it wouldn't matter if we made them all here...they would still be more expensive (which is why they were being made in China in the first place) and cause costs to rise.

For some reason low IQ populists can understand that raising the price of gas makes the price of everything else go up due to shipping costs going up. But they can't wrap their minds around the same thing happening with tariffs on auto parts and plane parts causing shipping to be more expensive.

You can't tell me exactly what the ratio is between the price of gas being $4.00 a gallon vs $3.00 and how much more your groceries (or anything else that gets shipped) are at the store, but only a moron would act like the inability to be specific about that means that it isn't happening.

And the same idiocy applies to doing the same thing with tariffs.

In other words, y'all's favorite tariff gotcha only exposes you as the morons you are. (Actually, you all learned to parrot this from Slow Dumb Vagina Tiger, and if there's another poster on this board dumber than him whom I would never ever quote, I don't know who it would be).
