Too bad and puzzling that Andy Griffith was a flaming liberal in real life.

Have heard that he and the lady who played Aunt B were usually at each other's throats over politics.

I grew up in Fairhope, AL in the 70's...about as close as you can get to Mayberry back then.

and a total a-hole

He somehow kept that quiet for decades. His PR firm definitely earned their fees.

Always a great life lessons to be learned by watching that show: honesty, hard work, integrity, respect for elders, faith, etc.
A window into the way things used be, and still is, in some places.

Lack of diversity and/or LGBTQ characters.

I don't know about that. I've always thought the episode when Opie went on a guilt trip for killing a bird with a slingshot was the beginning of the wussification of America.

You got multiple responses of people saying their home towns were Mayberry too.

So was mine. Port Vincent in the 80s was still Mayberry in the 60s. My grandfather even rocked the tan coveralls every day of his life.

I regularly tell my wife (a former yankee) about riding bikes to the local store to buy baseball cards and bubble gum or playing baseball with my cousins in cow fields or wandering through the woods on grand adventures.

It really is sad that that way of life is mostly gone.
