I don't think it could be paid for without gutting almost every social program.

Most would supplement their income and continue to work.. if it increases social mobility I think it's worth a shot. Being able to afford to move would have huge benefits for the poor segments of the population

Sounds like he'd make a decent commerce secretary under Presidents Trump I, II and III.

If all communities would consciously choose to not have kids after one they can not afford then the problem is solved.

This poor guy is going to get destroyed in the primary.

He makes lots of good points though. Not enough orange man bad for the Dems.

I can see where this would go.

People who are already fiscally responsible - married, working and with low debt - would stand to benefit tremendously from the additional $24k annually.

And then those who are not fiscally responsible would start to question why those who had "already won life's lottery" were getting ahead "on the backs of the poor" (i.e., them).

Now consider the ethnic demographics of the two groups of people described above and you may begin to comprehend why UBI could never, ever work.

There is already a huge cry from progressives for means-testing SS benefits to promote "fairness" - why do you think that UBI would ever be truly "Universal"?

I think there are some things that could, and should be tried first, before going whole hog into UBI.

For example the work week. That hasn't changed since.. dunno the 30's? At least the definiition of a full-time job.

Go to a 32 hour work week, 4 days a week. If you need five day coverage (unless or until society evolved to the "Three Day Weekend"), why you have to hire - more workers.

And salary. I've seen people who didn't come close to working 40 hours a week on salary. And I've seen jobs where they expected 70+ hours a week.

Get rid of salary. EVERYONE is hourly.

Then we have the freaking mess of healthcare...

The guys who say you'd have to totally reorder existing social programs to implement UBI are right though I think.

Thing is, it's coming. Automation I mean. Whether the day we have reliable self-driving vehicles is five years off or ten, I do not know. But they are coming. The sensors are there, the computing power is there, and both at a reasonable price.

When the day comes that a good percentage of people whose sole real indispensability to a number of businesses is that they can drive a motor vehicle are made redundant, we are going to see another big wave of layoffs. Actually it probably will be the biggest we've seen. Your guess is as good as mine as to how quickly it happens. My estimate is around a five year period.

But I kind of expect to see a world where the idea of manually operating a motor vehicle is ludicrous to the young, and an insurance company wouldn't want to touch a manual driver.

I browsed his website. Overall I like his perspective and perogatives, but I immediately tune out when I see a politician call for single payer without addressing how much it will cost. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see a paragraph telling g how he will pay for it.

A huge problem in America is people ignoring the realities of what it takes to have what they want. This goes from the ghetto to capital hill. Life isn't a fairy tale. You can't just magically give everyone everything their heart desires.

Stop and think Antifa.

Option 1: liberty people keep an extra thousand a month

Option 2: take the money from the people. Hire a bunch of goverment workers. Have the goverment manage the UBI program. Then this new entity gives the money back

Which option COSTS more?

I thought it was pretty clear.

So, you disagree that the majority of the middle to upper class is largely of European descent?

And that POC are far more likely to live in poverty?

Not sure what you find amusing about facts
