The guy who got shot is claiming he didn't want anything bad to happen even though he tried to pull the guy out of his car and would have beat him, possibly to death:

Good shoot. He seemed to instinctively know that he could use the hostile crowd as his cover. He did what was necessary to get out safely and quickly extricate himself from a very volatile situation without further violence.

The guy that got shot is about to be on ABC morning news. They're making him out to be the good guy "that tried to stop a gunman"

It seems these “protestors” are so detached from possible consequences of their actions they couldn’t fathom someone was actually shot for trying to rip another out of their vehicle so they could proceed to trample and beat him into oblivion.
