Is the Prep stuff used to prevent HIV? Or is it for folks who already have HIV?

Have not seen the ad but remember one from a year ago (?) with two dudes making eyes at each other from across a subway station when they meet for the first time.
Also remember reading a magazine "news" story a couple of years ago during the monkeypox outbreak. One guy interviewed talked about having picked up monkeypox AND Gonorrhea over after having sex with several guys over a weekend during pride month, seeming incredulous that that could happen and SOMETHING should be done.
