Seems like most people with autism are like him now.
The rare cases are the non verbal.
Everyone is on the spectrum these days.

We passed a bill some years ago that funds billions to autism. We broadened the spectrum to include any child who ate too much halloween candy. We gave extra funding to schools for kids within spectrum, who then helped diagnose the kids. The parents can get an array of drugs because of that to counteract the halloween candy. They can then claim social security benes for that child.
Amazingly when you fund it, it grows.
Are there autistic kids, sure a couple were described in this thread, bless them and their parents. And it is a disservice to them when idiots like "greta the green child" is catching flack so she is suddenly disabled and off limits to any criticism.

my nephew is 14 and 5’11 180lb manchild
he is also completely non-verbal
my wife’s best friend has a 20 year old completely non-verbal son
both cases are brutal to experience
And this is why we need another term for a fully independent pro fooking golfer who has some personality quirks. I also have relatives in this situation, and hearing some woman whose kid just needs his arse beat "Oh, we understand, Kaylen is on the spectrum as well" makes me want to do bad things to her.

It’s amazing how some people take messaging. I’m not , at all, saying autism can’t be serious and horrific. It absolutely can be.
I’m saying the totality of the number is impossible to compare to historical numbers because of people like the OP being autistic today
It’s honestly very similar to climate change. Is it changing? Of course. But compared to history, we have no clue the magnitude or reference of change due to it simply never being monitored like today

He might’ve had it as a kid, but he outgrew most of it
Looks like he’s just using the diagnosis for attention nowadays

We spent 1000s on OT and minimal medications. It was a war K-8 and conflict 9-12. K-3 was heartbreaking.
We're still in the K-3 range. It's a rough road, but the progress is so very rewarding.
The sad part is our child isn't the "lowest" achiever in our first grade. Kids who aren't "special needs" score lower on standardized tests while we're over here fighting tooth and nail to keep our kid "at grade level." I don't understand how it's possible to do that poorly as a "normal" kid without it being an intentional effort.

my nephew has the intellect of a 2.5 year old in the body of an 8th grade offensive tackle. When he is happy, he is quite sweet. When he is aggravated or frustrated he is straight up HULK SMASH
my BIL and SIL have not been able to stay for an entire family Holiday function in ten years. Their son has enough and starts wigging out and they have to take him home.
my wife’s friend is even more sobering, he is 20 and can somewhat feed himself but he doesnt seem to feel joy. he is either totally silent and introverted or he is frustrated and flailing about.
I have nothing but respect and empathy for parents of autistic kids and what they go through.
i have afriend with a daughter with Down’s and she is a total joy to be around. totally different experience than a parent with a non-verbal autistic child
