America’s Army Betrayed in Afghanistan by Presidents and Generals

quote:
Under the simple-minded President George W. Bush and the feckless President Barack Obama, as well as the peacetime generals whose conduct of the war will live in infamy, the U.S. military has been subjected to the greatest humiliation in its long and storied history.
quote:
Our soldiers have died because there was not a single general—not David Petraeus, not Stanley McChrystal, not James Mattis—who demanded of the president, on pain of instant resignation, that we win.
None of them was a general worthy of the name; instead they were small-minded, tactical obsessives concerned with hitting their metrics rather than winning. As Thomas Ricks pointed out in a 2012 piece in The Atlantic excoriating the U.S. generalship of the period: “A private who loses his rifle is now punished more than a general who loses his part of a war. In the wars of the past decade, hundreds of Army generals were deployed to the field, and the available evidence indicates that not one was relieved by the military brass for combat ineffectiveness.”
quote:
And yet … here we are, in February 2020, and the “war” is still dragging on, and still claiming young American lives.

100%
The only way a leader gets punished is for dipping his own in the company ink or taking outright bribes. Everyone should be demanding we come home without the will to win.

General Anti would have won this back in 2001 and never an American boot on the ground in this hellhole.
Just as soon as we knew right after 9-11 where the training camps were and that Osama was holed up in Tora Bora, we should have launched tactical nuclear strikes against the camps, said Tora Bora, the God Damned poppy fields and any other target we deemed necessary in this god forsaken place.
The country was angry as hell and would have supported any retaliation we so chose at that time. Those strikes would have sent a message throughout the world that the gloves were damn sure off, and you boys stepped in it this time. No one would have dared stood up to us.
Those strikes, along with the assassinations by whatever means necessary around the world of whoever had anything to do with the 9-11 plot, would have taken care of a lot of the problems we have today. They would have sent a message of pure brute force, the only thing the animals behind the strike on us understand.
And, a lot of young American men and women that have been killed and maimed in wars overseas would be alive and whole today. But the window was open for a very short time, and it is long closed. There are those of you that think me insane, well frick you. We see what your way has gotten us.

I've yet to hear a good explanation on what exactly we get in Afghanistan if we "win."
Get the hell out of that place.

Also, there is no "win" in Afghanistan for the military anymore. They did their job 17 years ago.

I worked for CJSOTF back in 2012. Nightly we would raid “the shadow governor of Nagarhar, Kunar, etc” guess what? Two nights later a hellfire would come off my rail yet again at the new “shadow governor.” Never ends
God forbid you shot the wrong guy. It wasn’t the targeting was wrong or the intel. It was the aircrew who shot the missile.

There never was a win there. Once we went in, the thing to do was support the decision. But the decision was bad.
Hell the ones that did this likely wanted us there. No one ever wins a ground war there. Not the British Empire. Not The Red Army. No one. Those people live to fight wars.
The only way to win was hit them where it hurts. Wipe out the camps and destroy the poppies. And never put a single soldier there for them to fight. Nuke the place, make it uninhabitable.
Refugee problem? Boo hoo hoo. Next time don't support the bad guys.

Why do you think I put that on the list? If it were up to me we'd hit Langley with a neutron weapon and all of us would be better off, the traitors.

"Win" has been redefined as nation building, installing a government...
"Win" should have been, go in, disable the terror network that was in place and the government that was supporting them in such a manner that no one would want to do it again in the next 20 years, then GTFO...
You cannot create a non-shithole out of a shithole...

You were the Neo-con NextGen's (Rubio's) biggest fanboy for a while.
Glad to see you are finally seeing reason.

But even if this was achieved, what does this do for the US? And as far as terrorrorists goes, they've simply relocated to another country.

Vietnam?
And you could say the same thing about many other large and powerful empires in Afghanistan
The British, Soviet Union, United States
There's nothing to win there!! Its a dead end

No benefit whatsoever but it keeps us there indefinitely which is what these political generals and the MIC want...
Afghanistan was "won" very early on...

It isn't going to get better anytime soon. We've got a whole generation of Obama Sycophants and Supporters firmly entrenched in the Pentagon, and throughout the DoD in general, to run through.
