That may be an overgeneralisation. At least certain ethnic groups, designated as "white", have intense pride for their own group. That's certainly true of Polish and Czech Americans in Central Texas whose forebears emigrated to the Lone Star State in the 19th century. The same is true for Italians.

I ask because I think I am the originator of that analogy. Back in the late 60s at NASA, we were having a brisk discussion of some new systems requirements and someone made a ridiculous suggestion.
I responded with 'that makes as much sense as screen doors on a submarine' - a completely impromptu random remark made up as I got to the "as much sense as . . . " part of my response.
At that time, someone in Mission Control was keeping a log of "memorable sayings" heard in engineering circles at NASA. It made the list with attribution to me. I began hearing it sporadically in discussions up until I left in late 80s.
I have never heard it outside that environment.
So thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Almost 100% I heard it as a Pollock joke in the early 80s, which is why I threw it in here. Interesting to hear the source of it.
