Pushing debt when unemployment is under 5 is the issue. Classic economic view is under 5.0 unemployment, deficit spending stops becoming a stimulus and becomes and anchor.
The issue no one wants to address is what were the job numbers public vs private sector under Biden and how does that compare historically? Then add how much of those numbers weren’t full time employment vs historical.
Factor in the 15 - 20 million illegals now on government subsidies and you have the biggest smoke and mirrors economy ever created in human history.
All historical metrics are shite based on the parameters we are currently facing.

Our organization is within the DoD and this doesn't appear to have affected us, but there is a lot of uncertainty. In general, I have felt that this restructuring has been desperately needed. There are a lot of inefficiencies and wasteful processes in government -- the result of decades of reactionary policies stacked over one another -- many of these in an effort to reduce costs or prevent fraud, but they ultimately end up costing more in the form of wasted time.
I see a lot of bloodlust here for Feds, which I get. If the axe falls our way, I am prepared to accept my fate. I just hope we will get an opportunity to show that the return on investment from our group to taxpayers has paid for our salaries many 10s, if not 100x over.
As has been pointed out, workers on "probation" include high performers that have recently been promoted. I know a couple of them personally -- very intelligent and hard working.
Just know that we are not all leaches. Most of my colleagues could be making more in the private sector, but remain in civil service because they love their country and believe in the mission.
My 2c.

I know three federal employees who for years have bragged about how “lax” their job was and one even spends most of her work days during the summer weeks lounging by her pool with a laptop just in case something is needed. They even built an outdoor lounge area last year specifically for her to lay around outside and “work”.
These are people making 6 figures yearly.
Maybe all these years people in federal jobs should have taken them seriously. I know that is not all of them, but it’s a running joke in the contracting world for every 1 private sector employee they have 5-6 government counterparts doing the same job. That’s ridiculous.

15 years in one position but recently got promoted or moved to a different position or agency and they still got fired.
This is a made-up scenario that doesn’t apply to federal workers. Why did you make it up?
If a job has a probationary period, a federal worker can count previous federal work experience toward that probationary period. Example: Joe has worked for FedGov for 8 years. He take a new position with a one year probationary period classification. That one year is satisfied by his previous 8 years of FedGov work.
Now back to the question. Why did you make up the scenario?

So much tough talk in here, "frick them we're broke!". I bet a lot of people here had vastly different attitudes when Hillary said she wanted to toss coal miners out on their asses. Back then, Dem voters were saying "frick them, muh climate!". How'd that turn out for her and Democrats?
I hope you all can hear that - it's the sound of millions of additional Dem votes in 2026. The ads are writing themselves at this point - Elon shuts down govt agency that would oversee his payment system, gets hundreds of millions in contracts and purchases from federal govt, does not label them waste, labels everything else waste, then fires thousands of middle class workers.
The solution here is retire, not fire.

You can’t be serious. Imagine thinking these low iq government employees who have zero accountability are critical to anything. Half of them aren’t even working which is why they are so opposed to going back to office where they won’t do anything but waste taxpayer money anyway.

I always thought probationary types were people with 2 years or less in the GS.

It sucked to be forced to work air traffic during the shutdowns and not get payed. But we knew that if they were forcing us to work, then we had job security. Anyone who isn’t forced to work during a government shutdown might not be that valuable to America.

You’re developing brain worms.

This is not accurate. I know two who are in this exact situation.

I had 9 years of federal service when I lost my job to yhe BRAC process. Bill Clinton was President. No one in the media or Democrat Party felt sorry for me. I moved on and survived. So will these workers.

It is accurate. If you know people who are in that situation, they completely changed jobs and are not doing a job similar to the last FedGov job they held. In other words, they’re new to their new job.

I know people that have lost their jobs to illegal immigration too. Collateral damage is hell in war.
