There's different forms of winning; losing more slowly than anticipated and drumming up support around the world is a form of winning, after a fashion-- making a total victory either more costly or less likely can secure a better settlement. Objectively, no one on the ground in the Ukraine is better today than they were yesterday, or the day before that, or the day before that.
The problem tends to arise that people come to any discussion with preconcieved axes to grind; whether it be that the news can report no truth whatsoever, or that the Ukrainians belonged in NATO and people who didn't think so kick babies for fun.

Most of you baws don’t remember this but in Desert Storm the Iraqi Republican Guard was hailed as the most elite fighting force in the universe. The news promised that they would paint the desert red with American and ally blood. At the first sight of Apache helicopters the Republican Guard shite their pants and threw up surrender flags to remotely piloted observation drones. It may just be that the Russian army, while formidable in the right circumstances, just doesn’t want to be there and their effort is showing.
