Good on Alabama!!!

MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) - Alabama lawmakers have voted to prohibit any alterations to Confederate monuments or markers. With a vote of 69-29, the House accepted final revisions Friday and sent the bill to Gov. Kay Ivey. Thursday's Senate vote was 25-8.

The bill would prohibit the removal of monuments installed more than 40 years ago. A new state commission would grant or deny permission for changes to monuments, markers, streets and school names standing for at least 20 years.

Black lawmakers objected throughout the session. Sen. Hank Sanders, a Selma Democrat, says the monuments represent "oppression to a large part of the people in the state."

Rep. Mack Butler asked opposed lawmakers if they support "sanitizing" history.

Displaying these Confederate monuments is a protected right under the 1st Amendment. This was a bold, but necessary move by the Alabama legislature.

It is indeed a victory for free speech, akin to atheists being allowed to set up monuments on the courthouse lawn.

Are you seriously arguing that prohibiting a city from altering its own monuments is PRO free speech?

You can protect them from government. You can't protect them from bad intentions

They have done nothing that can't be undone by a change in leadership or political pressure.

Look at the vote count.

Do you know what the chances are of that many seats in Alabama changing parties?

We have a reputation to uphold. Wouldn't want anyone thinking we've got uppity and left the 1860's

So you don't see how government excluding something based solely on political viewpoints or religion is anti-First Amendment? Good God.
