In Crocodile Eats Sun there's a chapter on why the international press won't talk about Zimbabwe still having AIDS as No. 1 cause of death. It's politically incorrect.

Nah, the majority of people with HIV globally are heterosexual native Africans. The largest single HIV demographic is heterosexual African women (40%) due to widespread rape, genital mutilation and a poorly screened blood supply.

There was a conspiracy theory in the gay community that AIDS was an overblown ploy by the conservative right to make gay men go back in the closet. Hence, there was a lot of resistance to public health measures.

Yes, the gay community in San Francisco at the time was about as depraved and degenerate in their behavior as anyone could get. They abused drugs and sodomized each other with reckless abandon within the bath houses. Really gross stuff. They accelerated the pandemic and were never really held accountable. If it had just stayed within their community, the rest of the country wouldn't have cared much. Sadly they spread it to innocent hemophiliacs and heteronormative people.
