Don't care. You literally said, "If he has his way, everyone who smokes a single joint would spend 18 months in prison."

Own it.

The misinformation here is just amazing. Offenders are sentenced by the Federal Sentencing Guidelines which are now only advisable, thanks to the Supreme Court. Sentencing has sharply declined in the past eight years and that lies on Federal Judges, not the Justice Department. The Attorney General prosecutes cases and Judges sentence them.

I fully expect Federal Task Forcces in New Orleans and Chicago, among other places that have seen sharp increases in gun related gang crime. We need this, can't we all agree?

Your Federal inmates who served long sentences for drug crimes have almost all been released because of the Sentencing Reform. Those Guidelines have been abolished by the Us Sentencing Commission. They no longer exist.

I saw a thread about aprivatized Prisons blocking Federal inmates from getting Parole. Federal Parole was abolished in the 80's. The Us Parole Commission still manages cases from Washington DC and some very very old Federal cases. That's all they do. the Prisons have nothing to do with Parole. it's an independent function.

I don't mind discussion but for the love of God, inform yourselves a little.

You're leaving out a whole lot of elements of the system that lead to the resulting statistics you're citing.

Also it's kind of a chicken and egg argument. Do they show up in the statistics because higher because the system is setup to convict them at a higher rate? 1980 certainly wasn't the first year black people existed in America so why start there?

The evidence is not debatable that blacks commit far more violent crimes than whites. The FBI's own statistics show this clearly. LINK

In 2012, blacks committed 5,531 murders while whites committed 4,582 murders. This is staggering when you consider Blacks make up 13% of the population while Whites make up between 60-75% of the population (depending on how you define "white").

Between 1980 and 2008 (30 year period) blacks committed about 50% of ALL murders in the U.S. This means for 30 years that 13% of the population committed 50% of all murders. It's an amazing statistic. And it's true. The DOJ's own statistics prove it. LINK

Taking all of that into account, has it ever occurred to you that Police stop and frisk blacks more often because the stats show they are more likely to be involved in criminal activity? Has it ever occurred to you that Police patrol black neighborhoods more often because that's where most of the crime is happening?

We can argue that some crimes are over prosecuted (like non-violent drug offenses), but we can't argue that the only reason more blacks are in jail is because of racism. No, the FBI and SOJ statistics show clearly that they are involved in more crime. Period. It's not debatable.

"Broken window policing" -- police overpatrol low income areas to fund their department and to keep the corrupt business of private prisons operating. they don't know that's why they are doing it.. they're just employees. It's interesting that poor black people and poor white people have similar police encounter statistics. I wonder why that is.

You want to talk about the murder rate.. black people committed 50% of murders in your given timeframe..

White people were victims of murder 50% of the time.. despite 83% of the population being white. This means per capita 4.5 out of 100,000 white people are a victim of murder... while 27.8 per 100,000 black people are victims of murder.

Serious progress has been made by black communities..

Looking at prison statistics, you would think America has more crime than any other country in the world. Are we really that bad of a people or is our prison system broken? Private prisons are a huge reason. When locking someone up makes someone else money, there are forces at work encouraging imprisonment of Americans that might not necessarily deserve it.

Most other countries in the world are too poor to have jails and they just shoot you or cut your hand off or something

Just another American who has to follow the laws on the books and doesn't get to pick and choose which ones I will follow unlike that shitebag and his cronies who were in charge the last eight years.

Yes. He's a libertarian nightmare, a drug warrior in a clearly failed war. Pvt prisons need bodies for profit, too! Sessions is taking us backwards.

Wow another story about what a Trump administration MIGHT do

This times a 1000, since Nov. 9th....Just a whole lot of speculation, conspiracy theories and BS conjecture. But at least it keeps the Poli board running like a well oiled machine.
