We tested for DS, and yes, if he did in fact have DS, we would have aborted. If that makes me/her a terrible person in some people's eyes, so be it.

i would choose to abort in such a situation - not sure how I feel about dictating that to others

Upvote for honesty. No, it doesn't make either one of you terrible. If the outcome had been DS and you had aborted, it would have meant that you made an informed choice for you and your family's livelihood.

I love when your real ideology is revealed underneath all that Trump-sycophant nonsense.

Nice edit, btw.

What “huge financial burden” does Downs precipitate? Honest question. I know some from a distance, and recognize that it requires more care and dedication from the family. I am not aware of it requiring significant state support, though.

Go to Superintendent of your local school district and ask them about it. I have. It's huge. The per pupil cost is over 10x normal students. And that's nothing to do with medical. Just school.

I'm sure it's very difficult for you to deal with. It's really hard on families. Hard enough on a family where they should be able to prevent it

What I don’t see anybody talking about is the validity of testing for Down’s Syndrome. I just mentioned this topic to my sister. She said that my oldest niece tested positive for Down Syndrome while my sister was pregnant with her. My niece DOES NOT have Down’s Syndrome. So what is the accuracy rate of the testing. Obviously, it is not 100%. What if someone told my sister that she had to about her baby based on her tests?

Or what is the government decided to use Downs Syndrome as an excuse to eliminate people with a certain gene or race or religion?

That's not always been true from a historical perspective. That's not even true now in all cultures. In Sparta, children with birth defects were left to die to try and keep the gene pool strong.

Sure. And some culture ate people.

What? What does the government have to do with any of this? An individual family decision. You guys are trying to turn this into some sort of sci-fi novel

Great point. You win. Mentally disabled people should not be aborted. You changed my mind now

Aborting a fetus due to known medical complications is 100% the choice of the mother.

Kids with Downs are often funny, friendly, outgoing, etc. There's a reason for that; they're perpetually living with the mind of a 6 year old. It's an awful condition being there is no hope and there is no cure...you just have to come to terms, as a parent, that you'll be dealing with this person the rest of your natural living life. We're natural caretakers with empathy, sympathy, and love. It's wholly natural for someone with a Downs child to fully embrace the child and say he or she is the best thing that ever happened to them.

Me? I don't want that responsibility. I don't want those frustrations. I don't need to deal with people staring. I don't want to deal with patronizing acts or comments ("Hey, look! Billy can sleep the floor very well! Way to go, Billy!"). I look forward to being an empty-nester to spend time with my wife traveling and finding adventures. I would abort the fetus without a second thought and be happy with my decision.

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. Fortunately, we have the choice in this country instead of being forced to abort or forced to raise a child with Downs.

I know several people with Downs. I sometimes think they have a better quality of life than I do. I know they are more consistently happy than I can muster. I also know they are able to show true love for others better than I can. And I would be considered a pretty "good" person...

Aborting Down syndrome babies
I have some empathy with the parents. They are scared and confused. This usually leads to them making uninformed and unfortunate decisions. There have been parents who were told their child had Down Syndrome only to be born genetically healthy.
