for the sake of diversity, I support forcibly rounding up blacks into the town square, have them picked one at a time, based on physical and strength characteristics, by whites familiar with the national parks, and have them transported (by force if necessary) to the four corners of the nation and be made to build camps, make fires, cook, and sing minstrels.

ABC doesn’t have a dog in this fight... oh wait, they are owned by Disney. Aren’t all of their parks closed right now?
Now do minority access to Disney theme parks compared to National Parks.

What color are they? And where do they fall in the 23%?

I was in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks yesterday. There was a very good mix of people. More Asian and Indian (dot) than I was expecting, but plenty of POC as well. More hispanic than black but saw quite a few black families as well.

I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting many national parks. The prerequisite for any visit: getting off the damn couch and going. Motivation is the key factor on any journey. Is motivation a racist concept?
Same concept overcomes "victimization". It is what divides victims from success stories.

Isn't southern Utah one of the most remarkable and beautiful places you've ever seen? Indescribable… everyone, please go check it out!
ETA.. those are BIG parks!! Even though "nearby" each other (relatively speaking), please tell me you didn't try to do both in a day or two.

Sometimes it’s awareness. Met a young black guy in a support program. He’d lived in Baton Rouge for 17 years and had never seen the Mississippi River and didn’t know is was right here in town. He had never even been taught the idea of being on time. Got through the course, learned how to be in time and practiced interviewing skills.... got on with a contractor at Exxonmobil and started seeing the benefit of a paycheck. Eventually got hired on at Exxon.
He commented that most of his friends in the neighborhood gave him shite about going to work. 2-3 friends eventually asked how he did it. 1 followed through and changed his course of life. Others are still in the hood. I heard he eventually moved out.
All that to say I bet many poor, of all colors, don’t even know about National Parks and yes they also probably lack the motivation to get out there and discover what life has the potential to offer if you put in the time/effort.

We went to Zion, Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon a few years ago. In September, we plan on going to Arches, Canyonlands, Monument Valley and Lake Powell!

Perhaps another in a long line of failures in education?

I love hearing stories like this. Thanks for sharing.

I’d like to see the stats about park utilization by nuclear families versus single parent household. I’d bet that would account for the majority of the variance.

It’s a shame that many organizations that were vital in helping kids get outdoors (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, churches, etc.) have been demonized and no longer fulfill that role. I remember that busloads of kids used to cross the Causeway from New Orleans to visit Fountainbleau State Park. I think that the organizers charged a few bucks per person and profit was the motivation. Whatever it takes.

This is where people are officially jumping off the bandwagon.

The crux of the article is, minorities don’t want to or can’t afford to go to National parks. And because the country will one day be a majority of minorities, if the parks don’t encourage minorities to visit, they will lose funding and eventually go bankrupt.
It cost $35 per car for 7 days at Yellowstone. That's less than a family of 4 pays for 1 night at the movies. Maybe minorities don't care about nature's wonders. Perhaps polling minorities to find out what they prioritize would be more enlightening than making some ridiculous assumption that national parks are somehow racist bc minorities don't go as often. Geography is another factor. Most parks are out west where there are fewer urban areas and thus a lower minority population.

Sure, but let’s be honest, you can’t just hop in a car and drive to the Grand Canyon and it cost you $35 bucks. Many people in the inner cities don’t even own a car anyway.
