I would bet that This is exactly how it happened. I don't doubt he was scared and thought the kid was trying to break in. But I don't believe he needed to shoot the kid. Close the main door back and lock it. The old man sees all the rioting, crime being committed by people who look just like that kid. It sucks he was shot because of the horrific reputation his demographic has these days.
