Poll: 71% of Americans Say Political Correctness Has Silenced Discussions Society Needs to Have, 58% Have Political Views They’re Afraid to Share

By Emily Ekins
October 31, 2017

The Cato 2017 Free Speech and Tolerance Survey, a new national poll of 2,300 U.S. adults, finds that 71% Americans believe that political correctness has silenced important discussions our society needs to have. The consequences are personal—58% of Americans believe the political climate prevents them from sharing their own political beliefs.

I don’t really think that there should even be a discussion about this.

I think people should be able to freely express their views no matter how fricked up they are.

Anywhere. In any form of media. As with this website, I believe that other than posting pornography; you should be able to say what you want.

I’ve even advocated for many of those who have been banned for their release. Even though I don’t agree with them. At all.

Simply, because it doesn’t matter to me WHAT YOU SAY; but what you do...

Simple as that.

How about threats against people?

Or better yet, how about people freely expressing terroristic views at your kids elementary school or your church or in front of your house?

I think any intellectually honest person knows that he wasn’t including either of those ridiculous things in his post. Seeing as, as I’m sure you know, SCOTUS has long since ruled that speech inciting violence is not protected speech

As a black man its funny to me when white co workers are having a discussion and they mention me as not being like the "normal black people". Thats the first sign of the disconnect.
It never bothers me because I appreciate knowing what a persons true beliefs are. There is nothing like person that acts fake

No. Just think it’s counterproductive and dishonest when people intentionally misrepresent what others are saying when their underlying meaning is so clear

Thus, we have lunacy like "diversity visas" that are not even an issue that is discussed.

Absolutely. Why not? Being able to easily identify the problem people by their own words and actions would make it easier to eliminate the problem people. Don't you agree?

Are you kidding? How about you challenge his post instead of mine. He was unequivocal, and I asked questions in my post so that I wouldn't misrepresent. I'm looking for clarity for frick sake.

And my point is, everyone has their limit of what's acceptable and what isn't. We should be careful not to use absolutes, like he did.

No. I have common sense, which tells me he wasn’t including the incitement of violence with free speech.

And in this conversation, it doesn’t matter what “everyone’s limit” for what’s acceptable is. Free speech has been defined in this country for quite some time. Individuals perception of it does not change what the limits of free speech are

It's interesting that your coworkers think normal black people are the criminal kind. I always thought normal black people were the ones like me

or yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater? All falls under realm of free speech.

None of that has to do with Political Correctness.

As I've said many times here, Political Correctness is little more than explaining away an incorrect concept as somehow acceptable. If something is 'correct', there is no reason to modify the term. It's either correct or not.

Lol. I was banned for several months for a simple unpleasant comment about Barrack’s husband.

Obviously, that is ignorant. However, do you take that as an insult or a compliment?

I don't believe anyone is really free to discuss this OP openly.

neither. When you're black and grow up in the burbs you get use other blacks from other sides of town saying the same thing.
