Honestly, it was a remarkable nationwide celebration that lasted most of the year but really peaked over the 4th of July weekend.

I remember the Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts uniforms included a red, white, and blue neckerchief as part of the official uniform for 1975 and 1976. And yes, I still have my old Scout uniforms from those years.

I also recall watching President Ford ring the Liberty bell on Independence Day and then hopping into Dad's old '57 Thunderbird to go ride around town that afternoon while we loaded up on smoke bombs, sparklers, and the contraband explosive stuff to play with that night after the city fireworks display.

It was hot, humid, and hazy in our town that day and I remember it like it was only a week ago.

It's a damned shame that we've allowed the communists to subvert this year's Independence Day celebration. In only fifty years we've allowed them to turn the best holiday of the year into a shriek-fest for every malcontent that resides within our borders.

What I remember the most is the Freedom Train that came to Baton Rouge for a couple of days. Took my oldest son and wife. It was a USA history museum inside the many train cars. Who else remembers this?
I don't recall all the details of it, but I do remember it was awesome!

And to end the year, we got to watch Rocky Balboa make his debut. Plus, Bad News Bears. The Omen. Carrie. King Kong. The Shaggy DA. Gus. Outlaw Josey Wales.

It was a freaking awesome year to be a kid.
