Damned white people and Evangelical Christians, no doubt.

quote:

On the beaches of the tiny Cocos (Keeling) Islands, population 600, marine scientists found 977,000 shoes and 373,000 toothbrushes.

A comprehensive survey of debris on the islands – among the most remote places on Earth, in the Indian Ocean – has found a staggering amount of rubbish washed ashore. This included 414m pieces of plastic, weighing 238 tonnes.

The study, published in the journal Nature, concluded the volume of debris points to the exponential increase of global plastic polluting the world’s oceans and “highlights a worrying trend in the production and discharge of single-use products”.

Living in the BR area, I know exactly which landfill my waste goes. It's not Louisiana dumping trash into the ocean.

If liberals really cared about pollution they'd say something about the third world shitholes that are responsible for 99% of it.

Did someone actually count the debris or is this an estimate?

Yea, the liberals in my area (smack dab in the middle of the country), where there is basically no dumping or littering to speak of, have been pushing the paper straw and no plastic grocery bags bullshite hard. These are people driven by emotion and wanting to feel good about things rather than actually do meaningful things. America is not the cause of the massive amounts of plastic in the oceans.

We should make the Far East pay a plastic footprint credit.

Considering 3/4 of the planets 3rd and 4th world countries either have shore or tributaries that empty into the Indian Ocean basin, it's not surprising. The civilized world has no clue that the Indian Ocean is a kitchen sink, bathtub, and trash can.

bullshite

No doubt, a lot of trash was found, but there is no way they counted sufficiently enough to arrive at this number. Its a global warming, Algore, climate change, way over the top guesstimation

It appears to be a great location to build a recycling plant. The natives probably need jobs.
