Taxation without representation was the whole premise behind our founding. If you pay no [federal] taxes, do you even deserve representation?

100%

Leaches shouldn't be able to vote.

Excellent. Exactly as it should be. People should be able to keep their own money

quote:

the other wants to protect the most vulnerable amongst us
One problem with this thinking is that it's enablement. Many people believe the wrong thing to do is for the govt to keep stepping in and enabling people to continue to be "vulnerable." Another problem is that it ignores that many of these people are vulnerable by their own choice. Another problem is that the political establishment has decided that in order to buy their vote, many people who aren't vulnerable have been included in that category. No one should be in favor of this

they're both just clamoring for their supporters to get more handouts
People and businesses keeping their own money is not a "handout"

That is insane.

Again, when Trump wanted to eliminate tax on tips—which would undeniably increase that 40% number—the board thought it was great, because anybody paying less income tax is a good thing.

Why the double standard on this topic?

I’m fine with getting a vote if you pay no taxes.

I think if you pay taxes, you should get MORE than one vote. Maybe one extra vote per X thousand dollars in taxes paid.

Edited for accuracy.

Flat tax!

Nah, I’d rather a national sales tax with no income tax. That way, even drug dealers and politicians would have to pay.

Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750
He also didn't take the paycheck allocated to the president. So he gave back way more than he owed on that income

quote:

He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely because he reported losing much more money than he made
He has been publicly honest about the fact that he took advantage of what the tax code allowed, which is what this whole discussion is about. People like him are being taxed through the roof in other ways. Those income tax deductions don't even come close to the rest. Besides, this point isn't relevant. The top earners in america are paying nearly all of the income tax being collected by the govt. The rich are funding the poor through the govt so the establishment can stay in power. It's a massive grift. No one should be ok with this

So he paid more than 40% of the households in the US combined?

Then how do you propose that parish and county sheriffs and other first responders are funded adequately? A portion of property taxes are raised to pay their salaries.

Sales tax.

Property taxes mean you never really own property.

Higher sales tax. Property tax means you don’t own your property. You gotta pay someone else to keep it. Sales tax would also pass along some of the cost to people who use those services but don’t live in the parish.

That person experiences poverty that you would never want to experience. I'm never bothered by someone with an EBT card, because I know that I wouldn't want to be living the life or having the income that would qualify me to receive those benefits.

I like the idea of a consumption tax. All the people that have entitlements and buy 500 dollar shoes and 1,000 dollar phones can pay consumption tax on that. Don't tax grocery food.

See if there is less waste of money if you did something like that.

Property taxes are the taxes you pay to ensure that public services that you receive (where your property is located) are adequately funded.

Move to a country that only taxes property once or not at all, and report back to me and let me know about the quality of public services available in that country.

Thanks, mensa. I know where they go. Now explain why they couldn't be replaced with a different tax.

No. Ownership begins and ends with a mortgage that is paid in full.

Paying property taxes means that you recognize the public benefit that you receive from services that you receive and that they have to be paid for, and you're willing to (just like every other property owner around you) pay into public coffers to ensure that those services are maintained.

That sucks if your income is only $70K. But you should still be paying income tax even if you’re poor.

If you don’t pay it, they take your property. This means they own it. They set the amount you must pay to keep it.

Those services obviously need to be funded, property taxes aren’t the only way to do so.
