Is it time to talk about VA benefits abuse being another welfare scam?

Living U.S. veterans: about 15.7 million in 2024, according to the Census Bureau.

Veterans receiving VA disability compensation: 6,338,253 at the end of fiscal year 2025

6.34 million÷15.7 million˜40.4% so roughly 4 out of every 10 living veterans receive VA disability compensation

VA Report

Before you say they served, so they deserve, and I agree if their claim is legit. The other argument is "I would rather they get it than welfare queens," and again, I agree, but it doesn't have to be one or the other.

Most claims seem to be from easily faked issues or issues that we all suffer from as we age. I always figured PTSD was the easiest for scammers to make a claim

Here's how it breaks down by conflict. The craziest number to me is 880K are on disability from peacetime.

Like all things in our modern world, there has been a rise on social media of people abusing it and encouraging others to do the same.

If that's the case, then recruiters might as well advertise that as long as you serve 4 years, you have a 40% chance of $3500 per month in lifetime disability, free college, free healthcare, and a VA mortgage. BTW, it is practically impossible these days to foreclose on a VA mortgage so no need to even pay that.

It’s weird that the chart doesn’t have a designation for GWOT veterans.

VA disability is 5x more than SNAP. You can always tell the people mooching the free money when this topic is brought up. You out yourselves.

Is this a hill you want to die on? This is the least of our country’s problems.

Can't we attack more than one issue at a time?

All jobs require you to run miles with 50 to 100 pounds of extra equipment? I don't think you carrying around an extra 100 pounds of fat is the same.

Really? I know guys and gals who worked admin office jobs and are now working full time while getting almost 100% disability checks from their time in the service.

The time to say "this shite has become a racket" has long past.

What % of current disability recipients do you think did this regularly?

Air force requires you to do this? I don't think it does.

Isn't the requirement to carry 35 pounds for 12 miles in 3 hours?

Not arguing about those who went to a conflict. We all know many in Vietnam or the ME had to do that daily. This is more or less about those who never did more than basic training.

I have the utmost respect for our military and veterans.

HOWEVER

I'd say probably 80-90% of tricare/VA patients I treat are just trying to add another diagnosis to their problem list. Also, 99% of those have a PTSD diagnosis.

It's a huge scam.
