36 Democrats demand Biden give up the authority to launch nuclear weapons

REDUCING ‘REAL RISKS’: Nearly three dozen House Democrats on Monday called on Biden to relinquish his sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, in the latest appeal to reform the command-and-control structure so that no single person can initiate a nuclear war.
“...Vesting one person with this authority entails real risks,” states the letter spearheaded by Rep. Jimmy Panetta of California. “Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment.“
“While any president would presumably consult with advisors before ordering a nuclear attack, there is no requirement to do so,” the letter adds. “The military is obligated to carry out the order if they assess it is legal under the laws of war. Under the current posture of U.S. nuclear forces, that attack would happen in minutes.”
They offer a number of alternatives, including requiring other officials in the line of succession, such as the vice president and the speaker of the House — “neither of whom can be removed by the president if they disagree — to concur with a launch order.”

But why take away presidential authority in a million small ways? What's their end game with changing who gets the nuke button?

Biden is scary enough, but after watching House Dem's for the last 4 years.... no way do i want them controlling the switch for the garage lights, let alone nukes!!!

While I do agree that Biden's dementia-laden arse shouldn't be part of the decision-making process to launch nukes, doesn't an order to launch by the President already require consent from SecDef or other?
ETA: Just checked, I guess SecDef just verifies the order actually came from the President. Learn something new everyday. Regardless, what is the end game of the dims here?

I feel safe knowing that if an attack launch is detected, our response depends on our ability to get Kamala, Nance, and Joe Hidin on a conference call within the time before the strike hits.

So, how, given that response time is measure in thirty minutes at most, or as few as ten or less if submarine launched, would we retain any deterrence? Philosophically I agree with them. Practically, I don’t think it can work like they want.
How about this? Congress, why don’t you start with the necessity of a declaration of war before troops or other conventional forces can be committed. Start there WITH THE CONSTITUTION and let’s see where it goes from there.

I thought the same thing. I knew we had a "Two-man rule" but I thought the second cabinet member/SecDef had to agree with the order, not just verify it came from the President.
They played this situation out in the movie The Sum of All Fears.

I added the yahoo news article to the OP. Notice how the yahoo article is saying a former sec def is saying they suggested it changed when Pelosi bitched about Trump.
The dems get 36 people to demand it then Pelosi saves face by saying, we wanted to do this when Trump was in.
This is nothing but giving Kamala & Pelosi power. We all know this means Pelosi, as she would order Kamala.
I wouldn't trust any democrat with the nuke codes. Hell, I wouldn't trust most republicans or Turtle. Because if their lobbyists paid them to do something they would.
